BG-E6 Pics

ChrisBurch

Oddly enough, today I recieved the BG-E6 battery grip in the mail after ordering from Adorama on 12/1. If only I actually had the camera to go with it. Thankfully, my 5D Mark II shipped from Adorama today (ordered 9/22), so I shouldn't have to wait long. But then I still won't have a second battery until those ship, too.Since I couldn't find any useful info or pics of the grip before buying, I have included a scanned copy of the feature graphic in the manual and two shots of the grip itself. Hope you find it useful. I couldn't tell you anything about the performance yet since I don't have anything to plug it into, but I will say the grip is rather large and squared off (no finger grooves) -- feels bulky to me and I don't have small hands.http://www.chrisburch.com/post/BG-E6(manual).jpg http://www.chrisburch.com/post/BG-E6(1).jpg http://www.chrisburch.com/post/BG-E6(2).jpg

...at least now you have something to hold onto, while you're waiting for your camera...

Did you notice that this grip has no serial number engraved on it? The grip I had for my 40D and 50D, the BG-E2N, had a serial number.

When will Canon put an ISO button on the battery grip? It's a royal pain to change the iso when you're shooting vertical. And Canon should also implement rotation detection for whether or not grip buttons, dials work or not. Just like how some P&S cameras automatically rotate the image you're viewing if you turn the camera 90 degress. This would allow them to put more buttons on top of the vertical grip that are ontop of the camera: WB, AF, ISO, metering, drive mode, FEC, etc.Rotation detection wouldn't be a fix all because there might be times you're holding and using the vertical grip but the camera is still horizontal.I still much prefer the EOS-3/1v battery grip for ergonomics far more than the one I have for my 5D. The 5D is too square and hurts to hold it for a period of time. The EOS-3 grip is much more contoured to your hand.

ChrisBurch

I looked all over, even inside the battery compartment, and there is no serial number.

Especially considering the price of this thing - a good $50 over the price of the 5D grip when it came out, and it is more or less the same.

I have the battery grip too and no camera yet. :/Wayndomwrote:...at least now you have something to hold onto, while you're waiting for your camera...Well, I had that before the battery grip too.

Can someone who has the grip confirm that it also includes the AA battery magazine BGM-E6?For $280 that should be included, but I haven't seen anything official that say it is. The manual you posted seems to imply it does. I know all the other grips did (for 20D, XTi, 5D)

ChrisBurch

The grip does come with the tray to hold (6) AA batteries. That tray will not hold the regular camera batteries, though. I think there is another tray available for the large batteries, but you can insert them directly into the grip, so there is little advantage to having one.FYI, I now have and LOVE the 5D Mark II and the grip looks rather silly when mounted on the camera -- doesn't look like it belongs with the camera and that's a real disappointment. Fortunately the grip works just fine with only one battery, as those seem to be even more scarce than the camera bodies.

one should rename this piece of accessory into "make my camera look like a 1D body pimp my camera grip"i bet 90% or even more just by that thing to get a cheap 1d camera feel.with the new battery for the 5dII there is hardly any need to have two cameras on the body. the batteries last for ages. 700 shots with ease.

Looks like Canon finally decided to add the AF-ON button on the grip. Wish they had included it on the 40D battery grip.

They don't look like they're actually part of the body. Compare it to the D300/D700 grips and you'll see what I mean.Either way, grips aren't for looks, they're job is to help with portrait orientation, ergonomics (for some), and provide extended battery life.

I've had problem with the grip for the 40D, the tightening knob and the mechanism inside to screw the grip into the body has broken twice on my 40D, tho I had warranty and got it fixed. And NO it was not due to over tightening the mechanism, first time i broke it was it normal pressure and second time the knob like "jumped" off the screw inside and just spinned around. Now I've ordered a 5D Mark 2 with the new BG-E6 grip, is the build quality better on that grip? And is the tightening knob made of plastic aswell as the BG-E2N?

ChrisBurch

The knob is plastic, but I didn't examine it much before putting it on, so I couldn't tell you how durable it was built. I will say that I have to constantly tighten mine after frequent use.

Shamus1

Wondered why if the grip will accomadate the AA's why not an adapter for the BP-511's? That would be a gold mine for an enterprisiing company.

Looks like you have a dust problem, heheh. -- http://www.pbase.com/victorengel/

I have the grip and no complaints in any direction and I suppose you could say I bought, in a way, to make it feel like a 1 series camera - but that's because that's how I like to handle a camera!!!

guru388

I put the grip on my 40D and now with the 5d mk2 I see no need for it at all. Just something else to spend money on.Howard
