Detroit Auto Show - 1D3 with 24-105mm
SayersWeb
Sunday morning we made an unplanned visit to the Detroit Auto Show. This was my first time shooting something like this, so I wasn't sure how best to approach it. There was a fairly large crowd making it difficult not to include people, so I did my best to incorporate them into the compositions. All shots were taken hand-held with available light.1/250s f/4.0 at 28.0mm iso640:1/100s f/6.3 at 45.0mm iso640:1/50s f/6.3 at 24.0mm iso640:1/160s f/6.3 at 24.0mm iso640:1/125s f/6.3 at 28.0mm iso640:I also used a 20D with the Canon 10-22mm lens, taking advantage of the cartoon-ish look the ultra wide angle. These photos (along with more taken with the 1D3) can be seen here:http://www.pbase.com/sayer/auto_show_2009

I brought my 5D Mark II and my 24-70 f2.8I like the composition of your shots, and you got way more photos than I did Sayer. Your gallery is great. I took my 14 year old son and two of his friends there last Friday when they had a day off school. They were more interested in the super models than the carsThis was my favorite sports car:This image reminded me of a hot wheels set:This was my favorite electric sports car:I hope the auto show does enough to keep people interested in buying new cars and moving the economy along.

Thanks for that Kevin. It was nice to get out and do some photography... after being snowed in for so many weeks.Kevin Barrettwrote:I think you did quite well here. Very nice results. -- Kevin Barrett Lowell, MI http://www.kbfoto.com

Hi Ted,So... you didn't take many photos of the super models for the boys to remember the show by?I was surprised by how big the show is and how many interesting displays were on hand. Apparently, the show was scaled back this year... I can only imagine what it was like previously.SayerTed Williamsonwrote:I brought my 5D Mark II and my 24-70 f2.8I like the composition of your shots, and you got way more photos than I did Sayer. Thanks!I used auto white balance in-camera and then adjusted in Lightroom using the "dropper" tool. It sometimes took a couple of clicks in Lightroom until the WB looked right.DotCom Editorwrote:How did you set your white balance? You did very well for your first attempt, and your eye for spotting the better available lighting was good.As someone who shoots cars for a liiving, lives in the area, and has been to the show, I say: keep practicing and learning; your gallerey is better than most such I see in forums by beginners.Warmest Regards, David -- Keep learning; share knowledge; think seriously about outcomes; seek wisdom.

Thank you David! I've always avoided car photography because I had no idea how to do it... I am definitely more inclined to try in the future.David Franklinwrote:You did very well for your first attempt, and your eye for spotting the better available lighting was good.As someone who shoots cars for a liiving, lives in the area, and has been to the show, I say: keep practicing and learning; your gallerey is better than most such I see in forums by beginners.Warmest Regards, David -- Keep learning; share knowledge; think seriously about outcomes; seek wisdom.
