40D kit or body only?

Looking at picking up the 40D in the next week. Trying to decide on buying the kit or just the body. Will be using it to take mostly outdoor daytime action shots. I was also looking at adding the 50mm f1.4 for portrait. If I buy the body kit, should I go with 17-85 or the 28-135. The 28 does not seem wide enough but the 17 has poor reviews at 17. If I get the body only, I could get the Canon 24-105 mm EF f/4L IS USM Lens.

If I were you, if I hadn't any lenses, I'd go for body kit with 18-55 IS - sure, it's not great, but it is cheap and lets you figure where to go next. 17-85 I wouldn't touch (tried it once, wasn't very impressed), and 28-135 is not wide enough from my point of view.. at least if you don't plan to get something wider too.I had bunch of lenses, and debated adding 18-55 IS kit to my 40D purchase just for laughs anyway, but then didn't bother; I'm using it mostly with 24-105, I think. It is not very wide either, but I have Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 and Tokina 12-24 f/4 if I feel like going wider - I seldom do though, except when taking city pictures where you can't always back up..

The 24-105 is a really nice lens. That's what I bought to use on my 40D. I find it is usually wide enough for me. When I want to go wider than 24 I usually want wider than 17 which calls for another lens anyway. I don't think you would be disappointed with it. I have the 17-85 which came with my XT. It is a decent lens except for 17-22 where there is CA and distortion. My husband uses the XT/17-85 now and he likes it, but he rarely uses the wide end of it.

Going with a kit seems to be a nobrainer. You can always sell the lens for more than you paid in the kit.As for the 17-85 vs 28-135 I promtply returned the 17-85. Did not like it at all.28-135 on the other hand proved to be a very decent lens. Focus distance for me it's perfect outside and for inside I have 17-55.I would not go with the kit 18-55. You will want to sell it as you progress but the resale value is low.

get the kit with 28-135 its a great lens and it will serve exactly what you are looking for..good good review too this lensi got also 50/1.4 for portraits its an amazing lens very good

Break the kit.The 17-85 is usable, but terrible on 40D. Lens doesn't let you see what the body can do. my lineup would be: A) EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS with very limited budget (EFS for crop body only). B) EFS 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM with no great future plans for fullframe.C) EF 24-105 f/4L IS USM + really wide EFS 10-22 f/3.5-4.5 USM (EFS for crop body only) or 17-40 f/4L USM (good for crop, excellent for some fullframe in the future).

Fructusbiz

Go for 17-55/2.8 IS if you can afford it. 24 mm is really not wide enough for 1.6 crop.

In bundles the lenses come to a decent price. 17-85IS has a list price around 500€ in here and in a bundle 250-300€. It really is worth that price. A very nice lens for traveling/walk around etc. But you need other lenses too - depends on your interests.I have a couple other lenses (macro & a telezoom) and i am going to buy 1-2 HQ lenses , but 17-85 is a convenient lens for many uses - i will keep it anyway. -- Kari SLR photography for 40 years 60°15´N 24°03´ E
