noise reduction clarification

Bob Dzuricky

Hi to all - I'm new to this forum since taking possession of a 30D last week.In the Canon EOS 30D White Paper:http://www.robgalbraith.com/public_files/Canon_EOS_30D_White_Paper_20060222.pdfit states: "Unlike the 20D, the EOS 30D does not force the photographer to wait an amount of time equal to the exposure time while it applies long exposure nose reduction."I was experimenting in bulb mode last night & the camera was busy after every shot for a time equal to each exposure. The only way I was able to shoot 2 pics back-to-back was by turning noise reduction off. These were 2 to 4 minute exposures in Manual mode, Bulb, f5.6, ISO 100.The White Paper also states: "If the same shutter speed is used for continuous shooting in the shutter speed-priority AE mode or in the manual exposure mode, noise reduction will be performed on all the shots based on the first shot's noise data."Does this mean I am limited to Continuous Mode shooting with identical shutter speeds that are less than 30 seconds? Are long back-to-back shots in Bulb mode not possible? Or am I misunderstanding something or doing something wrong? Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks, -- Bob Dz http://www.dzcues.com

The 30D adds the third option to C.Fn-02. On the 20D, it was On or Off. On the 30D, there is a new option, Auto. Setting it to Auto can reduce the wait time than the On option. You can find out more info on the 30D manual page 168. -- Nelson Chen http://pbase.com/nelsonc 100% RAW shooter with Capture One ProPhotos of Italy:http://www.pbase.com/nelsonc/italy

I also tried ON & OFF. The only way I could take back-to-back exposures was with C.Fn-02 OFF.And the camera does, indeed, act as stated on p.168 in the manual. However, I've seen it mentioned in several places that the 30D will allow several exposures to be made - with Noise Reduction ON - without the long wait between exposures. (see link to White Paper in first post for just one example). -- Bob Dz http://www.dzcues.com

Here is the cause of your confusion:"For exposures of 1 second and longer, the EOS 30D then measures noise levels automatically and applies noise reduction only if it is determined that such a process would be beneficial."It does not say it is shorter. It says it (NR) is only applied when needed, thus reducing wait time.

I'd just like to hear a knowledgeable reply rather than suggestions to read the manual - which I have. -- Bob Dz http://www.dzcues.com
