Big print. Which one?

CityLights

This is Burney Falls in northern California. I am thinking about ordering a 16x24 print of this picture, but I am not sure which crop I like best.Which one do you think is better? The Whole Enchilada?Just the Best Parts?

Between those two, I think the big print deserves the big picture. More to look at and take in the full scope of the scene (IMHO). -- http://araasch.zenfolio.com/

I prefer the first one because the lower foreground helps draw the viewer's eyes into the composition. I would however crop out the tree branches in the upper right as it is a distracting element.

I prefer the second one. I think the first one has too many shadows for a landscape print. Not sure I'm explaining it well enough. -- Olga

Hmmmmmm.......I'm thinking it's good enough for two prints. Just get one of each!

seri_art

You're the artist so it's your call (as you well know). I personally find the first one more "special", the second one more "ordinary".

Richard Glenn

I think two prints are a good idea, but if I had to choose one, I'd go with #2. #1 shadows are too deep on the left and take away visually from the falls and the snowcovered bowl.

I'd pick number 1, as well, but agree that you should crop out the branches in the upper right corner. If you want to maintain aspect ratio, then you could also take out a little bit of the rocks at the bottom (but don't cause the water to be all the way to the edge... leave enough rocks there so the pool is enclosed).

AvyMan

Tough question. I guess what you need to define is what you want to convey to the viewer. If it's the falls themselves, along with the ice/frost then the second one is much better. Maybe it's the fallsandtheir surroundings. Then, of course, the first one, but the falls don't stand out as well in the shadows IMO.I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not so sure. The one you like best is what really matters. (Or the one your wife likes best ;))Nick --photography -- a compatible blend of tech and art --

I'd pick firt one too. It has more of the pond ( all of it actually). PP the branches out tough.Cheers -- Younes ( Paris, FR) K10D

For me is #2 a clear choice. It has more secret and less distortion. It makes me think about the real size of the fall and esp. lake, which reminds me little bit of a pool in the 1st pic. Both are nice, of course.

CatLikeFelix

I'd go for number 2.

Same thinking here. I think the first one has a better composition. The rock lining at bottom act as stoppers. My eyes would drop down the water fall and promptly climb back upcanuck davewrote:I prefer the first one because the lower foreground helps draw the viewer's eyes into the composition. davidgp

I strongly prefer the first one.I have a good friend who was raised in Burney... great scenery in that part of the world.David

Curve of the pond makes theshot.

AndMarios

I prefer the first one. I find it more interesting, more artistic and less "commercial". It is the one I would like on my wall. The second one is nice too though and I think I would choose it for an advertisement or something.

Schnapper

Looking at it again, I guess if you crop out a bit of the right side to get rid of the branches in the upper right corner you'll be cutting it too close to the water on the lower right side.I think you should go as it is (the first one)... the branches aren't that much of a distraction, and I think it's more important to keep the whole arc of rocks surrounding the pool at the bottom.Where are you going to print whichever you select? I've used mpix for big prints (gallery wrap is pretty cool and not very expensive), but I'm curious about the magnachrome metal prints that I've read about... I think it was here in this forum.Do you have a good printing shop/site recommendation?

I find that the inclusion of the whole pool and the rocks in the foreground really adds to the shot.Very nicely done! -- YogiWhen you get down to the nuts and bolts of photography, the results depend on the 'nut' behind the camera!See the 'Plan' in my 'Profile' for my current equipment.
