Canon 100mm Macro Lens your thoughts ?
Craig
Hi Guys,I'm looking at getting the 100mm macro lens for my canon 1d's, I do not do much marco but really want to start since I mainly do sports photography..I would be looking at taking still macro pictures... and something I can take to other body's when I upgrade would also be a benefit...What are peoples thoughts on this lens ? Do you think they will bring out a revised one soon maybe with IS.any pics are also welcomes..Thanks alot for reading and posting

I use the 100mm f2.8 USM Macro a lot, along with a MT-24EX macro flash for insect macros in the field. It's a terrific lens, here are a few samples (mostly with a 300D) :-

Worth the price difference IMO between it and the Sigma 105 mm, Tamron 90 mm, and Tokina 100 mm. Although image quality wise there isn't much in it, the Canon has greater working distance, better build, USM, faster AF, and has a non-rotating, non-extending barrel. What are peoples thoughts on this lens ? Do you think they will bring out a revised one soon maybe with IS.I can't imagine it is high on Canon's list for lenses to add IS. Although Nikon did add IS to their 105 mm macro, it isn't very effective at macro distances. The Canon 100 mm f/2.8 USM was only introduced in 2000.Your main decision should be the focal length. In general, increases in focal length lead to increases in the minimum working distance, but also with an increase in size and weight. But you say that you are shooting "still" macro, so size and weight on a tripod isn't of as much concern. Here are min. working distances for a sample of lenses (I don't have good data for the Tokina, so it is approximate):60 mm.......9 cm (EF-S) 90 mm…….9.7 cm (Tamron) 100 mm…..11 cm (Tokina) 100 mm....14.9 cm 105 mm….12.2 cm (Sigma) 150 mm....20 cm (Sigma) 180 mm....25 cmThe Sigma 150 mm is well worth considering. It has a good minimum working distance, isn't too large or heavy, and comes with a tripod mount and lens hood.any pics are also welcomes..I don't know if images really help, I have yet to find a dedicated macro lens that wasn't sharp. You would be really evaluating photographers, not lenses, but here are a few:Brian A.

You'll love this lens. I use it for both macro and general photography and have been very pleased with it.
