Using canon lenses on a non-Canon body

Pardon for a trivial question. If you put on Canon lenses on a Nikon body (via an adaptor), would everything still work (eg. AF, exif etc...)? Any side effect?I have a suite of canon lenses. Put they are being used on a D3 body that would be the best of both worlds...theoretically.

I made the same enquiry one time and the answer I get is NO. You can use the Nikon lenses on Canon cameras though.Mufutaulouis_wrote:Pardon for a trivial question. If you put on Canon lenses on a Nikon body (via an adaptor), would everything still work (eg. When Canon designed the EOS system they reduced the distance from the film plane to the lens mount flange over their previous system (to allow for larger maximum apertures and new lens designs). As a result, one can mount all manner of other lenses on an EOS body (with an adaptor) and still focus to infinity (I sometimes use Olympus OM lenses and accessories on my EOS cameras). This also makes it impossible to use the Canon lenses on any other camera.

Actually this is not correct. The lens flange to film plane distance in the FD system is 42.1mm, this was increased to 44mm in the EF system. The FD system was far more flexible and Canon themselves used to make adaptors for lenses from other manufactureres such as Pentax (M42, Nikon and Exacta).

The Nikon registration distance, the distance from the lens flange to the sensor plane, is 46.5 mm. The Canon EOS registration distance is 44 mm. There may be adaptors, but you would lose the ability to focus anywhere near infinity; it would be like using a lens with an extension tube.Brian A.
