Wide-angle Lens for M-Mount

Shooters on My Squad

Now that my M11 is ordered (can’t wait for it to arrive), I’m thinking about some lenses. I already got the Voigtländer APO-Lanthar 50mm 2.0 which is currently mounted on my Fujifilm X-Pro3, and I love this lens. I also like the Leica APO lenses, but as I already have the 50mm, and I don’t really like 35mm, I think it is better to go tele or wide. The Leica 75mm and 90mm lenses look great, but I think I’ll wait with them. This means either 21mm or 28mm. I am not sure about the frame lines in the viewfinder for these focal lengths and how visible they are. First I went through the available 28mm lenses, and there I’ve found many choices:So I’m really not sure in the end, as there are enough pros & cons for most of the lenses, and even the Q2. Maybe I should start to compare the 21mm lenses.

Here are my thoughts about the 21mm lenses I consider:I will get just one lens, either a 21mm or a 28mm, but the more I research, the more questions I have.

I bought a Q2 as my color "28mm" (it's a little wider than 28mm) rather than any of the M mount options. I have a 1980s version three 28/2.8 Elmarit too for b&w use and can use it on Ms if desired. With 28mm M lenses you can compose using your camera's 28mm framelines. With 21mm lenses you'll need to use an external optical viewfinder or a Visoflex EVF or the rear LCD screen. Or you can just wing it.-Dave-

First I went through the available 28mm lenses, and there I’ve found many choices:I also went through the similar Journey... moved from Fuji X-pro3 with its primes to M10-R with 35 and 50 last year. I also had difficulty to choose 28mm as all of them are really good choices. So I spent quite a bit of time to compare the options and asked for advice as well. My conclusion is that there is no single best choice. The final decision came down to what fits one's needs the most and the compromise and trade-off of their strengths and weakness one wants to take. This is the best performance and most cinematic of all fixed 28mm lenses in term of overall IQ ( except CA, and the f/1.7 lux on Q2 in the sharpness department). But think twice about the size and weight. I almost bought this lens but I really worry about the weight which may make me not using it much.Check this review out:https://www.streetsilhouettes.com/home/2017/3/12/quick-comparison-two-generations-of-leica-28mm-lensesGreat performance overall. The color is a little more on the muted side. If this is your thing, you will be happy. Superior handling and ergonomic. Sharpness is excellent but behind Viogtlander Ultron II in the center when focusing below infinity. When focus infinity, the corners are also less sharp than the Ultron 28 II.Beni Haisch had a comprehensive comparison ( link attached below). Also find the video comparison that Matt Osborne did. It was an excellent review too.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_mW0ADrBTYCheck out Fremiranda's review. It is very comprehensive! And you have a lot of real world samples in the thread there:https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1704868/0This lens rivals the 28 summicron ASPH II. It's much cheaper, smaller, lighter and sharper, and it focuses closer ( which can be a great deal). Color rendition is more expressive and more pop than the cron. It is an excellent lens and better Optical performance than the cron. The only real drawback is that the vignette is quite strong when the lens is wide open but nothing cannot be corrected in post.Sharp wide open for real world application. Small, light and Leica ergonomic. Check out Jimmy Cheng's review ( BTW I really enjoy his channel!). This lens is his preferred one in this FL and here is why:https://youtube.com/watch?v=sytu12hNdQE&si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarEI really admire this lens given its size, performance and handling. But if Leica ergonomic and design are not the top priority, the VM Ultron II makes even more sense.I agree. Plus the 1/3 stop aperture really turns me off.Best Sharpness and suffer less CA overall. The best part is you can shoot macro with it. This is a big deal! Distortion is there tho but most parts are corrected in the software. The AF is fast and accurate most of the time. Experience is similar to Fuji or any AF digital camera. The MF is good but not a full MF experience like that on the M. The shutter dial is in full stop and you need to use the right wheel to access the 1/3 stops between. To me this is a let down for the handling experience. Also the aperture is in 1/3 stops. I like the M's 1/2 stop set up more as it's easier to count without looking, which makes the whole experience simple and more intuitve when doing full manual. If you want the best sharpness 28 lux, and don't mind the operation difference between the M and Q2, this can be a great choice. Also the files are different. Q2's more digital feel. Files from M10-R look a little more organic. It's hard to describe but I like the files from M10-R more.I chose the Q2 because I dont like swapping lenses and it's macro feature. Also it acts as the back-up and " lens care-free" family trip camera to me. Another good thing about Q2 is that the 28mm frame line on the RF of the M10-R ( and M11) are hard to see with glasses. So the EVF makes sense to me in this case. Here is a great comparison of Q2 to the summicron and summilux on another thread a while back (NSFW):https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4616010So I’m really not sure in the end, as there are enough pros & cons for most of the lenses, and even the Q2. Maybe I should start to compare the 21mm lenses.Again, all are good choices! Hope you find yours soon!

I like the Elmar 24/3.8. Don't know why Leica discontinued it, so it would be a used purchase. At wide focal lengths, it is a rare shot you want to open the aperture more than f/3.8.Here it is on an SL.See Original size. If you want really compact, there is the Perar 21/4.5, a pancake triplet. Vignettes like heck. Here it is on a Fuji X-Pro2.

Hey Fellas,I just got my m11 too.  I got a used 90mm apo that is amazing.  I also picked up the zeiss 21mm and it's a great lens for the money!  Some people don't like it for some reason but I love it!

is pretty nice too.For 28mm, the voigtlander seems for me the best option
