No doubt their design are from Panasonic.

In which case you could get a new Leica 50 for less than the price of a Lumix.

Personally I doubt it, but to each their own

Any guesses on when these will ship? Or does Leica not typically share that? Thanks

Personally I doubt it, but to each their ownPerhaps, but I'm waiting to see the actual images before I decide. As to coatings... they are not cheap; example, compare the cost and quality of glasses from the optometrist vs the drug store - you can tell immediately which are superior and the cost is often more than 3x difference. And, there are possibly a lot more differences than just those you've listed, including potential hand grinding of lenses (often done by Leica), build and assembly, QC, etc.To be clear, I am not saying that they are worth the asking price, and I am not immediately in the market to buy them. What I am saying is that - to me - I don't think there is enough information to understand whether the differences are worth the extra price. Time will reveal more...

MrQuimper

How come there are so few image samples from these lenses? Not even from the usual suspects! So far the only images I've found are on the Leica website

I shot the 50. I've never shot the Panny so I couldn't tell you if it was similar. But, I was really impressed with the size, but more the weight. So light and portable but the materials are all Leica SL feel. I've owned both 50 SL's and I think this one would get the most use, based on size and weight vs. IQ....I thought IQ was really nice, the 50 has a real Leica "look" to it. Nice for portraits as it has a muted look to skin tones but zoomed in is SHARP sharp sharp.  Even more curious about the 35.

I'd be curious to see how it compares to the Panny, which is supposed to be 100% the same lens from an optical standpoint but even lighter (but plastic vs metal), especially since you mention it has a real Leica "look", whatever that means.

I pre-ordered it but am so eager to see what it'll produce!

I've never shot a Panasonic and have no issues with Panasonic and Leica engineers and designers working together. Seems to me, sharing information is smart.

Its mentioned twice that the new SL 35 and 50 lenses are 'made in Portugal'.  Any owners out there how is your lens marked ?

thatkatmat2

They are marked with the usual engraving under the focus ring on the back with the "Leica Camera Wetzler" and the model # under those words. The "Made in Portugal" and Serial Number are printed on the bottom of the mount near the rear element in white.

Mr Flip

Ephotozine just posted its tests of both new 50 and 35mm non APO sl lenses. The resolution looks great in the center generally but less than exciting edge results suggest these are not going to produce consistent sharpness across the field for landscape work. Perhaps owners can offer their opinions in this? The few sample images show really great color and a nice 3D feel. The same site also tested Panasonic 50 and 35mm “s” lenses at 1.8 aperture vs f2. . I am guessing these are the same lens designs; however the overall results are quite different.it’s rare that Leica high end lenses are tested presumably because of the prohibitive prices of acquiring them. Perhaps Ephotozine could acquire either the 35 or 50 APO sl for comparison.I would be interested to know whether the APO sl lenses would provide more consistent resolution edge to center than the non APO versions. Def would consider a purchase if so.
