Is Nikon D7100 built-in Flash Capable of HSS

momo

Hi All,I am considering buying a Nikon D7100. I like the convenience of having a built-in flash for daytime fill flash. Is the build-in flash on D7100 capable of working with shutter faster than 1/250s? Or do I need external flash like SBxxx series? Thanks.AJ

With a compatibleauto FP high speed syncexternal (SB-700 for example), the camera can do auto FP high speed sync up to 1/8000s I think. Actually works pretty darn well though you are power limited (so the faster the shutter speed thew closer the subject needs to be).

FP flash is only available with external speedlights, as it requires a very fast recharging unit that discharges multiple times during the exposure (at reduced power). The built-in flash on the D7100 is rather weak and recharges slowly.Review page 244 of the manual, option e1. Note that there is a "grey zone" in which the single flash on the camera will barely work - 1/320 is the absolute max, but 1/250 is the reliable limit. Option e1 sets the shutter speed at which FP flash will be engaged, if a compatible speedlight is mounted.
