If you want to crop, you have 18% more space in width and 18% more space in height. Cropping 18% off still gives you a 16MP photo. (same as D7000 without cropping)If you plan to make larger printouts, with 6000x4000 pixels you can easily make a razorsharp 20 inch x 13.33 inch print. (with a professional RIP program like Onyx ProductionHouse you can double that)Disadvantage of 24MP is the filesize.

For the rest who find 5mp not good enough, 24mp has distinct and real advantage over 16It has real advantages, not sure I see them as distinct - if weneedthem must be individual depended. Some of the biggest advantages, as I see it, between the D7100 and D7000 i.e., is not directly related to pixel amount or density. Newer is always mainly similar to better.Though one of the advantages that most users can use, has just been up here. The ability to crop tighter - giving a kind of longer reach - I think without loosing image quality. But that does not of course stop at 24mp - so do weneed36 or 48. I think, there will be a need for whatever is technically possible without necessarily being a need for me. Being useful (and wishful)for me - no doubth.BirgerH.

That said, most users will still only "need" 5mp.I think, there will be a need for whatever is technically possible without necessarily being a need for me. Araldite wrote:Do we really need 24 MP or is 16 MP good enough for most usersWho is most users?  I guess the majority is amateurs.  I am very happy with the 16mp D7000, but I was also happy at 6mp.

What are you planning to shoot with it, and what are you planning to do with the images?

Araldite

Maybe a D7000 with a top quallity lens would be better than a D7100 with a kit lensie  D7000 / 16-85 vs D7100 /18-105

BEARMYLOVE

D7000  18-140This is what I got out of the camera.

BEARMYLOVE

This is with the D7100 and pp

BEARMYLOVE

This is out of the D7100. I am not knowledgeable like some people here -I just go by what I see and my gut feeling- I think the D7100 is the better camera
