Battery Grips...How Many Use Them?

Suntan

I prefer to use a grip because I have large hands and it makes holding the camera for long periods less straining. That said, I sometime leave it at home when travelling to make the backpack lighter.Back when I shot with a D300, it was more than just comfort. With only 12MP I would often shoot in portrait much more than I do now to maximize resolution. With 24MP and up I shoot in portrait much less, and just crop after the fact.

... an awful lot of guys on this thread all too eager to brag about their large hands? 😉😅

Has anybody man in these forums ever bragged about their small hands? Just curious....

MrHollywood

My wife has typically small hands for a lady and she also prefers the grip on her D90.I think the grips "win." Most people want them or at least want the option available.Rob

So a device that is intended to make it easier for people with large hands is found to be used by people with large hands, yet you find it funny for it's sexual innuendo...

Otherwise they just add bulk, weight and expense and get in the way.Ha! I’ve never used one for the very reasons you enumerated, but am feeling compelled to try one for shooting birds with my D850 to replace the fps of my now-sold D500. Wouldn’t do it though, if inexpensive third party options were not available.Yup, I know it's "only" an extra 2 FPS, but it's worth the expense and hassle to me, especially since my D850 is now my only wildlife camera.

It shouldn't be funny that most people responding to a question about who uses the device are people that claim to have large hands... ...it should be expected. I never heard Seinfeld start a session with, "Have you ever noticed how a lot of the people sitting in the driver's seat of a car are car drivers?"Further, to claim that "a lot of the photographers in this forum" are making this claim is rather obtuse thinking. Over 2.1 million posts in this forum, yet you claim "a lot" based on maybe 20 people responding to this post...?

But this thread wasn't about "winning" anything...just a general poll...

Funny you mentioned Sony, I have been seeing many reviews and posting about this specially the A7III (A73)....The images seems quite good....I was actually hoping that the D850 would have a 24-36 Mpx BSI Sensor, but that did not happen. I think that if the D850 had a fewer pixel count, it would have larger individual pixels and an even better DR + faster FPS - Maybe 10 FPS without ($1000) battery and grip. Note however that with the Battery Grip (I am using a third party grip, battery and charger for -$170), I was able to get 10 FPS on some test I have performed... I still think that the next iteration of the D750 might have this capability. The main specs that is preventing me to try the Sony - A73 is the EVF Lag and battery power consumption....Maybe for Events and Portraits but not for Action/Wildlife shoots....

Over 2.1 million posts in this forum, yet you claim "a lot" based on maybe 20 people responding to this post...?I think the PRIMARY design goal of any vertical grip is to facilitate vertical shooting.I shoot with the D850 and my wife uses a D90. Both of us find that the grips makes it FAR more comfortable to hold when shooting vertically. Her hands are small. I think her initial reaction to the grip was it was too large, but that faded after a bit of usage (more sexual stuff!).With my wonderful Meike D850 grip I get a LOT of benefits...faster shooting, crazy long battery life, wireless remote. For the money it's a VERY useful option and too inexpensive to pass up. My MCoplus grip is also pretty good, but doesn't have the remote.I don't think having small hands has much to do with it. The grip extends DOWN. If my wife holds the bigger D850 with Grip, the fit in her hands is the same as without grip. She's only contending with a small amount of added weight.Rob
