New Nikkor 24-70

hypercore360

This is a prediction...I expect to see a new Nikkor 24-70 f/4 with VR-III lens in 2013 or 2014 at the latest.  It's a foregone conclusion with the way Nikon's approach as of late. There should be nothing surprising about this.

Thank you.

Why would they make this when they already have a 24-120mm f/4 with VR II and a 24-85mm 3.5-5.6 also with VR II? Especially when the 24-120mm f4 is selling for a few hundred less than the new Canon 24-70mm f4 IS? To me it just doesn't make sense. I think you'll see a 24-70mm 2.8 with VR III sooner than an f4 version.

I sold my 24-70 for a variety of practical reasons, but a big one was trying out the Tamron 24-70 2.8. Naturally Nikon will not allow Tamron to have a "hit" lens and give up market share. The current 24-70 is already ancient history and you're 100% correct: It will get VR within a year, two at the outside. Those who think they don't need VR or any other personal reasons don't understand why Nikon is a top camera/lens company. They must move forward.Let's hope...1) That the new 24-70 VR is sharper in the corners.2) That it is at least as small and light as the Tamron version.3) That it optically improves enough to match the 14-24 and 70-200, two lenses that I feel are superb whereas the 24-70 is "only" very good. And keep it under 2 grand!Robert

I have to believe it will be lighter than the current rendition. The price of this hypothetical lens is a matter of +/-. It'll get cheaper because of better design / manufacturing, and if they make it f/4 and not f/2.8, but price goes up for the VR capabilities. Will have to wait and see.

I don't think the Nikkor 24-70 f2.8 will ever have VR and the same can be seen in the 2012 version of the Canon 24-70 f2.8.......there are chances that Nikon may come out with a f4 version which will surely have VR

Canon already made a new version of 24-70 f2.8 in 2012 without VR........but their f4 has VR so don't think Nikon needs to add VR to the 2.8 version to keep in competition......

I'm no expert but I thought we settled this nomenclature issue when the new 80-400 was released. The first iteration of VR in a lens is VR.  It's called VRIII if for example you already have a 18-200mm VRI and VRII that have previously existed and you now release a new 18-200. Then you'd have a VRIII lens. A VR version of the 24-70 if it ever comes out - would be VR not VRIII. No?
