How to change shoot mode in U-setting

Ricky-J-G

I inadvertently setup one of my landscape U modes on Z7 to aperture priority. I can't seem to find a way to alter to M mode while in the U-mode itself.  It looks like I'll need to rebuild the entire U-mode setting again, unless there is a way to alter the shooting mode from within a U-mode?  The Richo GR offers a way to change shooting mode, inside of it's U modes, but it's buried away. Can this be done on the Z series?

No.  Those are Exposure Modes. The idea with the U settings is that you can quickly get to a desired configuration of a collection of settings, including Exposure Mode, without needing to go to them individually.

Can you alter any of the settings?  I was going to investigate U mode. However, if they are locked in and cannot be modified once set, perhaps not.

For example, switching from Shutter Priority to Aperture Priority. You can do this:Set camera to Aperture Priority Adjust settings Save to U1To make updates:Switch to U1 Adjust settings Save to U1In order to go from U1 being aperture Priority to Manual, you would set camera to Manual, adjust settings and save to U1. Now U1 would be manual.

If selection of the Aperture priority exposure mode was “inadvertent” as you state why not just redo that U button with the desired Manual mode and your desired initial aperture, shutter speed, and ISO settings. It takes literally a few seconds. Until you reset it it will frustrate you at each use with your same inadvertent undesired exposure mode setting.

You have to go into Manual mode, set up the camera and then save (over-write) the settings for the appropriate U slot. The camera remembers the shooting mode the camera was in when the setting was saved.

But there is a “save menu settings” option under the setup menu, at least on my Z6ii. I have not tried this, but perhaps you can save this from your U-mode, switch back to M-mode, “load menu settings” and then save to the U-settings. This would prevent you having to adjust  all the settings, if your U-settings were significantly different from your M settings.

One reason I have never liked the U-mode settings/setup with our Z6/7/I/II’s and happy that they reinstated the four photo shooting and custom settings banks from Nikon DSLR days in the Z9. Although I’ve seen some people complain about the decision to do that with the Z9 and would have preferred it had kept the U-setup…
