Quick Advice Needed for Wedding Shoot with E3 & Flash

exapp

Hello,I've been asked at short notice to shoot my brother in law's wedding. They already have a pro photographer but want me to take more candid shots of their friends enjoying the day etc.I've an E-3/12-60/50-200/FL50R and the weather forecast is good. I mainly shoot nature / landscapes so I don't have a great deal of experience with the the flash outdoors so I would be grateful for any advice as to what settings I should use outdoors with the E-3/12-60/FL50R combo.I have a bit of experience using the E-3/12-60/FL50R bounced indoors but again would appreciate any advice as to the best settings to use...I'm hoping for white ceilingsI plan to use the E-3/50-200 to pick off shy guests from a distance outdoors...the shallow depth of field of this lens can look very appealing for candid portraits too. Thanks in advance...

is cool... no pressure. absolutely make sure the "Pro" is aware and OK with your role.also the couple will get confused at which camera to look at. they'll end up with photos with one person looking one way and the other looking the other etc., etc..if the Pro does not take command then i suggest you do. make it clear at the start whose camera takes precedence and how/when the second (you) can have the couple looking at your cam. your equipment list and stragety is perfectly fine.i've been in your shoes a few times and i got the best results from always shooting 45 degrees off the Pro's axis which gives perfect 2/3 view portraits whilst the subjects are looking away(at the "Pro"). PS try and shoot from the dark(shadow side). google it and you'll see why.FL-50 is pretty powerful but if i have decent ambient light (giving noticable but not harsh highlight/shadows on subjects [faces mainly]) i leave it off for outdoors. -- Thanks, Paul

If you need the flash fill for a subject against a very bright background then may be you have to use very high shutter speed or very small aperture. In this case it is most convenient is to use ISO auto, Shutter priority mode limit to the camera synch speed to preserve battery and make the flash recycling faster. If you want to use large aperture howerver, be prepare to sacrifice the highlight and use the flash in FP mode. You can shoot a test shot with anyone who want to model for you before your real shooting session with +/ - flash output, check the histogram to give you the general idea where you place the exposure at. Also pay attention to the FL that you are using to make sure that you have adequate shutter speed to avoid the hand vibration, IS mode will allow for 2 more stops.Sam H.

Shutter priority, maximum synch speed (probably 1/250 on the E3), Flash mode AUTO and flash compensation -1. Polarizing or ND filter if your DoF is too much (may need TTL mode here). This works in bright semitropical sunlight (lat 33) with groups with a wide range of skin tones- it may be a little more than you need. If the light is soft flash compensation -2 does little more than add a catchlight to the eyes.As said, don't get in the pro's way and don't use flash at all if it trips his slaves.
