K5 slow RAW write

Paul_R_H

HiI never timed it when it was new, but I feel like my K5 is getting slower to recover from a RAW burst. If I shoot a three-frame bracket, it's now 8 seconds before the orange light goes out and playback button allows viewing of all three frames without the hourglass icon. The review on this site says 18 sec to recover from a 24-frame RAW burst, and I just timed it at 45 sec until the orange light extinguishes and playback works fully.I format my cards, rather than just 'delete all'. I'm using Sandisk Ultra 30Mb/sec SDHC 8Mb.Just upgraded to firmware 1.13 and that makes no difference. Is this normal speed?Paul

Do you have any image processing features enabled? One way to test this would be to reset your camera settings and double check everything.BTW, I just checked and I think 3 shots took longer than 8 seconds on my unit.

Okay I wanted to update on this... I went ahead and reset my own settings and tried again. Three frames taken in raw, takes aprox. 2.5 seconds to write.Hope this helps.

With a card like that one you have, you should be able to clear 35 shots in about 20-30sec.http://cideway.com.au/2011/12/taking-it-to-the-extreme/My guess would be is that you have the distortion and ca correction functions turned on. -- Chris.A weather sealed ultra wide, is that too much to ask?http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/chrisideGMT +9.5Pentax SLR talk FAQ http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=23161072

Thanks for that.Strangely all the following are off: Chromatic aberration correction Distortion correction Highlight correction Shadow correction Hi-ISO NR Slow shutter NR(I don't know why those things should make a difference when you're not saving a JPEG but I know they do.)File format is DNG but PEF is barely quickerHmmmm.PaulCidewaywrote:With a card like that one you have, you should be able to clear 35 shots in about 20-30sec.http://cideway.com.au/2011/12/taking-it-to-the-extreme/My guess would be is that you have the distortion and ca correction functions turned on. -- Chris.A weather sealed ultra wide, is that too much to ask?http://www.pentaxphotogallery.com/chriside

John, it does help. It shows something is amiss here.Pauljohnbeewrote:Okay I wanted to update on this... I went ahead and reset my own settings and tried again. Three frames taken in raw, takes aprox. 2.5 seconds to write.Hope this helps.

I don't know sure for the K5 (I don't have one) but we figured out for the K20D, that if you set your image mode to anything other than "normal" then the camera has to process your files, so it will slow down the normal process times.see this conversation: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=41994942B.

Nope, just tried that and it doesn't make any difference either. But thanks for the ideaPaulnbelawrote:I don't know sure for the K5 (I don't have one) but we figured out for the K20D, that if you set your image mode to anything other than "normal" then the camera has to process your files, so it will slow down the normal process times.see this conversation: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1036&message=41994942B.

The 30mbs of the Ultra cards is the read speed, the write speed is much slower.

It could also be the internal wear leveling kicking in perhaps?Or perhaps the contacts on the card are getting a bit mucky so less write current is able to be used & hence slowing the card writes? A wipe with some meths/alcohol to clean them up?Failing that try a new card (not necessarily a full size replacement, just a small one to test).

Interesting. I just tried an older (20Mb/sec not 30Mb/sec) Sandisk card and it's much faster - the 24-shot buffer is all written in 16 sec. Went back to the original 'fast' 8Mb card and it's now taking a minute. That despite the fact that I completely zeroed the 8Mb card using my computer. So I think that card might be about to die and I'll get a new one. Paultorrent999wrote:LDBOKwrote:The 30mbs of the Ultra cards is the read speed, the write speed is much slower.Indeed. The reason, as I understand it, is that PDCU reads all the tags, so that unlike most (all?) other raw converters it opens with the equivalent of the JPG settings you used. Most converters don't read the tags so they don't affect the starting point of your raw conversion but Pentax in-camera software is geared to PDCU user.

If you're not comfortable cleaning contacts with alcohol (I know I'm not always comfortable doing that sort of thing), one thing I learned a long time ago (originally used it for the contacts on early cordless phone rechargers) is to use a pencil eraser and just go over the contact with that and see what you can remove in the way of tarnish, etc. (if you have some sort of lupe, etc., you may want to look at the contacts before and after to see if there's any difference).IF cleaning the contacts doesn't make any difference then YES, I'd say the card is about to GO.By the way, you kept calling that card 8MB, I'm pretty sure you meant to say 8GB, since an 8MB card wouldn't hold even ONE RAW file from a K-5. And if you're a member of Costco they now (finally) have the Sandisk Ultra UHS-1 cards (the 45 MBPS ones -- although those are faster than the K-5 is supposed to be able to write to) for about $32. I just got one. I already had one of the 30 MBPS 32 GB and a 16GB 45 MBPS (which I paid more than TWICE THAT for just a little more than a year ago from Amazon -- about $75, actually). If you don't have a Costco membership, maybe you have a friend who does. JeffPaul_R_Hwrote:Interesting.
