So far, I've decided to err of the side of caution. My less-than-informed impression is that it is possible to damage the body and/or flash with an incompatible combination, due to a mis-match of trigger voltages.You might ask the question on the DPR sub-forum for lighting, or the Stobist forum.

I can report that a Speedlite 299T works well directly connected. You'll need to turn the display effect off, though, so you don't have to compose with a dark screen.There are also high voltage trigger adapters that allow use of the older, higher voltage flashes on modern cameras:http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1119628-REG/vello_hsa_pvu_hot_shoe_adapter.html

I use my Canon 600 flash on my a7r2 routinely...anyways on manual mode...works great, haven't seen any problems..I also use the nissin i40...No ill effects noticed...
