Best A-mount lenses to use with LA-EA3?

Crotach

Now that the firmware update is coming to A7II that brings PDAF I'm thinking of trying out some A-mount glass.Basically we'll get the same autofocus that A7RII has, just not with 399 points but with 100+ that A7II has.I already have the LA-EA3 and some old Minolta lenses, but since the choice of FE glass is quite limiting I was wondering if there are any A-mount lenses worth pairing the A7II with?Mostly I'm wondering about the 135mm f/1.8 and a good zoom (70-300 maybe?)Does anyone have experience already from A7RII?

PDAF would of course only be useful for lenses that support AF on the LA-EA3. Since this adapter does not have an integrated autofocus drive (in contrast to the LA-EA4), only SSM and SAM lenses will work. What comes to mind are the 24-70 f/2.8 Vario Sonnar, the 70-200 f/2.8 G, the 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 G and some fast primes (50 f/1.4, 24 f/2). I don't have any experience with theses lenses, though.

Thanks Brian, that is an amazing test you've done!So I guess the primes I'm most interested in would not benefit from this upgrade, but at least there are some nice zooms that E-mount is missing

Get the LA-EA4 and the Sony 135mm f1.8. It is so good on the A7RII, you may never take it off the camera. The 70-400mm G2 works extremely well with the LA-EA3. It locks-on to birds-in-flight extremely well (even small birds).I now use the Batis 85, but when I need all the light gathering power I can muster, I use the Sigma 85mm f1.4 with the LA-EA3 and it works great in low light. It is one of the few 85's that is actually sharp at f1.4 and it can be had for $600, used.I use the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 ($750 used) and Tamron 70-200mm f2.8/LA-EA3 ($950 used), when not using the FE 70-200mm f4, and they work great. They are super sharp and focus fast on the A7RII. I tested the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 against the Sony 24-70mm f2.8 SSM1 and it is noticeably sharper at 70mm f2.8. The Tamron is an order of magnitude sharper, overall, than the FE 24-70mm f4. For me, the performance advantages make it worth the size/weight difference. If you want cheap and light, the Sony 85mm f2.8 SAM/LA-EA3 on the A7RII will have you pinching yourself when you review 100% crops, given the amazing sharpness that can be had in a $200 lens ($150, or less, used).

Brian, in your opinion does Sony A-mount 24-70 f2.8 II handles well on A7RII with LA-EA3? Is focus fast and accurate? And how it is optically - is it a good match for A7RII?Have you tested AF with Canon EF24-70 f2.8 II and MB adapter on A7RII? I was just wondering which setup would be better on A7RII? Thanks.
