Great expectations: Sony A7R II A7S II everyday carry lens?
PictureEditor
Hello,I'm a P/T pro (I work in photo technology) who predominately shoots Canon 5D3 / 6D. I've been trying to push on form-factor, video, sensor detail and light sensitivity and picked up an A7R II and A7S II to convert my kit. I've got the 28mm and the 90mm Sony lenses, but I'm still struggling to find a good everyday lens. I do a wide range of travel, documentary, and people photography.Recommendations? I could use a Metabones adapter. The 24-70 and 28-70 lenses don't seem to get ringing endorsements, nor does the 24-240.Thoughts or recommendations?I would go for quality over form factor, and both over price. Happy to adapt if I have to.Thanks!!!

Nothing wrong with the 24-70, its my main workhorse. I also like the 35 2.8, 55 1.8, 16-35, 70-200.

Sony is lacking in the excellent quality kit lens department. They should take lessons from the Fuji 18-55mm.Forget the FE 28-70mm as it never gets sharp in the corners. If you want an FE mount zoom then the 24-70 F4 is about all there is that is decent quality. It is really about the quality that a good kit lens should be. It might need stopping down to bring the corner sharpness up.If you are buying the A7rII you could go for the metabones 4 adapter and have a lot of canon lenses to choose from.If you are on a very tight budget then LAEA4 adapter plus Minolta lenses.Or LAEA3 and Sony, Sigma, Tamron A-mount lenses with internal motors. For Sony FE primes for walk around you have 28mm F2, 35mm F2.8 and 55mm F1.8 and 85mm F1.8.

The Zeiss 24-70/f4 is not nearly as bad as often made out by forists, I suggest you give it a try, perhaps renting one. There are many advantages of native versus adapted lenses: instant focus magnifier when turning the focus ring, better AF, full EXIF. Adapters also put the lenses too far froward from the camera body, making for an unbalanced feel.Of course the 55/1.8 would make a superb walk-around lens, but not if you are looking for the flexibility of a zoom and willing to make some compromise in IQ for that. Good luck!

I use the FE 28-135 f4 G lens all the time, its very sharp, fast to operate, and produces great prints.

My recommendations based on absolute quality would be the Batis 25/2, Sony/Zeiss 35/1.4, or the 55/1.8. You may need to try more than 1 35mm because of sample variation but any of those 3 will "fit the bill."All are contrasty and sharp, the 55 seemingly the sharpest. You can't go wrong with any.Jim

I'm not happy about it, but my inclination is continued use of the Canon 6d with bundled kit EF 24-105mm f4 IS for walk-around purposes. If I had to, I suppose I'd walk-around with the a7Rii + 28mm, and hope to be able to "zoom with my feet".I'm reluctantly considering purchase of a gray-market Sony FE 28-70mm until more affordable native lenses are available.

Though... it's a little too wide for people photography (at least for my taste)

Just keep in mind the 28-70mm kit lens never gets sharp in the corners even stopped down. Its sharp in the center and useful for family shots or a beater AF lens but does not do the A7 series cameras justice.

My every day lens is the Sony 55 f1.8. Lightweight but fast, its a quality lens. A little less exotic but still sharp, at least my copy, is the kit lens 28-70. I'm considering purchasing the crop lens Sony 18-105 F4 because of its higher optical flexibility. With the 55 f1.8 and 18-105 or 28-70, one has a lightweight and small 2 lens travel kit. A more complete kit would include my Sony 70-200 F4.

Hi guys,Thanks for all of the thoughtful replies. I think the 55mm 1.8 is probably the right option. I like the versatility of a zoom, but with the 28mm and the 90mm, I'll have a pretty good range covered at the expense of more lens switching. I'll just have to adjust my shooting style a bit.I'll keep an eye out for other replies, but thanks for all of the input.

I'm still looking for a really good FE standard zoom. I had the 28-70, sold it for the 24-70, then sold that to go back to the 28-70. The 24-70 was marginally better overall, but the 28-70 was better in the center. Neither is great in the corners. I took the monetary difference and bought some good primes. I suggest the 28-70, and when it matters pull out a prime. The 35/2.8 is tiny and easy to carry around, and has IMO excellent IQ.

Rumor has it that Sony is going to announce 8ish more FE lenses within a week or two, one of which is (again rumored to be) 24-70 (f/2.8 ?):http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/sr5-sony-officially-registered-a-new-24-70mm-fe-gm-lens-f2-8/So I'd hold for next two weeks before biting the bullet.

Happy to adapt if I have to.Thanks!!!I am now shooting A7Rii, 50/50 videos/stills, mainly for street, documentary and PJs, with Super-35 video. With my MATE (Leica Medium-Angle-Tri-Elmar 28-35-50/4), and 35Lux (Leica-M Summilux 35/1.4), with a close-up VM-e adapter. These support 80% of my need. When I want AF, I use my EF-L's F/1.2 primes, F/1.4 primes, F/2.8 zooms, etc, using my old Metabones III adapter, latest is MB4-T. The AF speed is comparable to that using my 5D2.Best luck for whatever you choose. . . . Steven
