Sony FE 28/2 better than expected, just buy it :)

My new Sony FE 28/2 arrived yesterday. It really might be one of the best walk around primes for A7 series camera. It is small and light, and has a nice wide aperture for low light. I thought a 35mm would be better, but I can still blur backgrounds with close ups, and the field of view is very useful.I am using a an A7s so any 'sharpness' issues matter little to me. The lens is good at 12 MP.Here is one of the 'brighter' scenes from last night's 'try-out' which is cropped and pretty average, but Ill try to post some better, higher ISO shots later. So, my advice, this little lens is a gem. It is fun to use, has an F/2.8 aperture, and makes a nice multi-purpose walk around lens. Best of all, it costs about 11/2 of what other FE lenses sell for.

Agree, it is a great lens. I hesitated for long time because of the sometimes negative reviews in the forums. Got a good deal from amazon italy, and am very glad that it's in my bag now. I actually canceled my Batis 25 preorder, even though the Batis may be better for the pixel corner peepers.PS: You mistyped, it is F2.0 lens of course... which gives it good background separation, for this focal length! To get any better, one would need the Otus 28/1.4

I have no clue if it can compare in sharpness to the 55mm FE, nor do I care. It is a very useful lens and final content matters more than 'sharpness' to me. As far as FE lenses go, this one is a bargain.

Agreed, it is a bargain and does punch above its weight.I hated it at first though (sent my first copy back, and bought another a few Months later), the high distortion and vignetting really put me off.You have touched on one valid point. At f2 you do get good subject isolation (with buttery smooth bokeh), which gives you unusual and unique options for wide angle portraiture, which I certainly did not expect with this lens.Compared to the FE 55mm, the lens is as sharp in the center, but nowhere near as sharp in the edges/corners. Peak center/edge/corner sharpness on the FE 28mm is at f5.6, and drops off after that. The FE 55mm is sharp corner to corner (on a flat plane) from f1.8, which is just incredible. Also, micro-contrast is high, and chromatic aberration is well controlled which adds to the FE 55's exceptional image quality.J

Of course the 55/1.8 is a very high bar to compare to... most lenses pale in comparison.I find 55 plus 28 a better match than 55 plus 35.

Agreed,I am extremely happy with that combo. It's all I need if I want to travel light.J

I also just purchased this lens - primarily because I wanted ONE native (FE) lens for general use.I was also surprised by the high quality images from this relatively low-cost lens. I also started using it for astrophotography, and getting good results -- no coma !! However, vignetting is a -problem.I have been shooting Canon for a number of years, with a vast array for lenses. By comparison, IN GENERAL, Sony lenses tend to be OVERPRICED for the quality delivered. This is an exception.
