Nex5R upgrade time...

Mtimmy98

Hello there,Been looking at new cameras for a while, but have decided I need some advice!Im 33 and have been shooting analogue since I was about 14, its still my format of choice and I use a Penax Super ME together with a large collection of zooms and primes.I have for the last 7 years also had a Sony NEX5R with the kit lens, which I have used for holidays and things where I dont want to risk damaging the analogue cameras.Im starting to feel the need for a better camera, and ideally I want it to be something that I use for everything! This means it will be going on motorbiking and mountain biking trips size is important. It will come travelling. It will be used primarily for photography with a bit of video.Price is of course important.(I rented an X-T4 and loved it, but its far far too big)Weather resistance is important, unless the camera is cheap enough...OptionsSony Nex5R keep plus buy the Sony 18-135 lens, allowing me to upgrade the camera later - Cheapest option plus allows me to upgrade. Video content a problem...Sony A6300/6400 + 18-135 - Bit on the high end cost wise, but obviously the best camera combo (But also most expensive)Sony RX100VI (M6) - Never tried this, but have been reading about it, obviously the compactness is great, and it seems pretty decent quality. Its in between the two options in price, but I worry that I will be disappointed with it?Hope someone can help me!

If you are buying used, the best value might be in a package deal.Perhaps you can find someone selling a body with the 18-135. I would personally look for the a6000, a6100 or a6400, but you have to see what's out there if this is the route you choose.

A6400 with 18-135 was my choice two years ago and I can recommend it now, despite switching to Sigma 18-50. I would look on used market.

OptionsSony Nex5R keep plus buy the Sony 18-135 lens, allowing me to upgrade the camera later - Cheapest option plus allows me to upgrade. Video content a problem...This would be my recommendation - if you can live without an EVF. You can get an EVF for the NEX5R used. It is very good. Or you can look for a used NEX6. Still small, but with the same EVF.Sony A6300/6400 + 18-135 - Bit on the high end cost wise, but obviously the best camera combo (But also most expensive)That would be my second option. The a6400 AF is much better. MPB has lots of a6300 on inventory.Sony RX100VI (M6) - Never tried this, but have been reading about it, obviously the compactness is great, and it seems pretty decent quality. I upgraded fron NEX-3 to NEX-6 and still; have it - its thinner and ligher than the A6xxx range. For better AF I added an A6300 which works well - obviously A6100/6400/6600 will be better but the previous generation of Sonys work nearly as well and are well priced 2nd hand. For limited luggage scenarios I would do something like the A6400+superzoom (18-135 is good but I would use my 16-70 if going v light, else 28-200 Tamron and 10-18 or 16)...

But the EVF is better than the one on the a6000. And the NEX5R allows to tilt the screen all the way into selfie mode. With Smile AF, people at events go crazyHere is one at MPB for €159:https://www.mpb.com/de-de/produkt/sony-fda-ev1s-elektronischer-sucher/sku-1829260

Video content a problem...If you've just been using the kit lens, this will be an upgrade, and not that much bigger, but not really pocketable. You might try other lenses too.Sony A6300/6400 + 18-135 - Bit on the high end cost wise, but obviously the best camera combo (But also most expensive)Newer cameras will give you more mp, if you feel like you need more detail. And better AF. And then the 18-135 is better. You lose a bit of portability (they are a tad larger than the 5r), but you already gave up your pockets by adding the 18-135 to your old camera! Main concern probably is price.Advantage is you have your old camera for trips where you don't want to risk your new one. Or just go for it. I tend to just use what I have, but I have used my older ones for backup.Sony RX100V I (M6) - Never tried this, but have been reading about it, obviously the compactness is great, and it seems pretty decent quality. Its in between the two options in price, but I worry that I will be disappointed with it?If this had been available 15 years ago, I might not have gotten the Nex-5! Most of the time, I just wanted better photos than the usual tiny sensors that were in every camera except bulky dslrs. I have had fun with different lenses, especially Tele for wildlife, airshows, etc., so I'm inclined to stick with e-mount.I think if you were OK with the image quality of the 5r with kit lens, this will be similar. The advantage is being more compact. I dunno the detail these new models, so there may be some advantages like the zoom range. Also, consider that sone venues will not allow interchangeable lens cameras.Hope someone can help me!
