There are two versions of the Sony Zeiss 55mm 1.8....what?

I just found out that there are 2 versions of this lens, the new version just has "Zeiss" written on the front of the lens whereas the previous one had "Carl Zeiss". Is anyone aware of this and what are the differences between the two?

Obviously one is vastly superior.

The simple answer is that Carl's son Fredericko Nathaniel Zeiss took over the business mid way through production but his name was too long to fit on the lens so they were going to shorten it to either Freddy or Zeiss. They tossed a coin and you have your answer.

OK, that's funny and (bearing in mind the earnestness of most Germans I have met) fairly plausible,   Which version is the more recent?  The picture of the lens on the dyxum database shows "Carl Zeiss" - and quite a lot of empty room for a longer name, :lol - on the front of the lens.  The pre-owned lenses from RCE Foto - where I buy my glass - all show just the word "Zeiss".CheersMike M

I know you are being sarcastic but its not uncommon for lens manufacturers to sneak in improvements in new batches of the same lens. Some comments Ive seen have mentioned that the new one is better corrected for coma etc.

The older ZE\ZF classic lines still have "Carl zeiss" on the front of the lens.
