Sony FE 50mm F1.4 GM or Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG DN Art or Other

If you're thinking of purchasing anew50mm F1.4 full frame lens for your Sony full frame mirrorless camera body, which one are you likely to purchase?

Usually I like to buy Sigma, but in this case, the Sony is smaller and better overall.I would say go with the Sony, if you dont mind the pricehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KeRbv228rZk

I'm currently on the fence. I like the price of the Sigma over the Sony. But I've never been really happy with 3rd party lenses. I'm leaning towards the Sony.

Going with Sony over Sigma for size and weight advantage. The price difference isn't enough to make up for those two factors over the long run.

The results from it are great. At the time I was looking at the ZA 55mm f1.8 but the Samyang had better sealing, a decent weight, and a lower price. I would have liked the new Sony as a G lens and/or f1.8 to bring the price lower. GM lenses, as great as they be, are beyond my needs and budget.

And with Sony’s small and lightweight (by comparison to competition) f/1.2 lens, I didn’t think an f/1.4 made a whole lot of sense. But since the lens they came up with was itself very small and light, it’s starting to make more sense to me … at least at the American pricing. In Europe no-one will buy this until it’s a lot less than €1850.A Sony 50 mm f/1.8 G would have suited me personally a lot better, though. I guess that will never come now. Right? Maybe they’ll update the existing f/1.8 eventually, though?

I voted “other lens”.I’m impressed by both the Sigma and the Sony new lenses. But I can’t afford the Sony (€1850 here, which even if I could afford, I wouldn’t pay in principle with the US price at $1300).And the Sigma is too big and heavy for my taste as a walkabout lens. The Sony too, to a lesser extent.I already have the 35 mm f/1.4, which lives up to its reputation. And I have the 20 mm f/1.8, ditto.Very fine lenses. And good max magnifications (for full frame). So which “other lens” to go with these and my 85 mm f/1.8?Sigma has been rumoured to have a 50 mm f/2 in the works for a long time now. Specs recently leaked (maybe to counter Sony’s lightweight f/1.4?).The question I will soon have to answer is whether to add this rumoured Sigma 50 mm f/2 or to swap my 40 mm f/2.5 for the 50 mm f/2.5. The f/2.5 lens focuses closer but loses 2/3 stop of light and depth-of-field control.I want a true 50 one way or another, although I thought I’d get away with the 40 instead. Doesn’t work for me, and even less so since getting the 35/1.4 with its similar angle of view (the 40 feels a lot more like a 35 than a 50 to me, which I suppose makes sense if the focal lengths are close to their nominal values – but it’s often pitched as a fifty replacement).

I favor the Sigma 45mm F2.8, but the FE ZA Planar works pretty well.I am more likely to buy more GM primes than an Art prime.

Geekapoo

Given the lenses I have and the frequency that I'd use a dedicated FF 50mm lens, Id buy the Samyang. Just as important, I love my Fuji 35mm f1.4, which is a 50mm FF equiv lens.Other focal length primes are much more appealing to me so why pay top dollar for the Sony (unless it's for professional purposes)? -- Richard https://www.flickr.com/photos/154538030@N02/albums

Even though the Sony is ridiculously priced at 1800€ where I live compared to 1000€ for the Sigma it would still be my pick simply because of its smaller, lighter, better weather sealed design that overall performs better on most aspects. But I would not buy it at current prices as I really think the value proportions are not right but it’s on my observation list.

Love the size, weight, IQ, and rendering and especially using the focus ring as aperture control. It's a bargain even at MSRP.

I'm not big on 50mm but if I was I'd pick the f1.4 GM, or maybe the Samyang mk II if I were trying to save a buck and even more weight. The Sigma doesn't look bad by any means tho, looks more tempting than the 35 DN was vs the GM (the former had worse AF than the 50 DN, and flared worse too IIRC).Hard to go wrong with any of them tbh, the system is spoiled for options!I 'll stick with my 35GM + SY45/1.8 + TTArtisan 50/2 for now tho, only time I prefer 50mm is when I'm photographing people primarily with a single lens and that isn't super common for me.

I can just hear the whining if they launch another 50mm tho. 😅

paul cool

As much as i like buying sony lenses i would most likley get the samyang 50mm mk2 f1.4 i prefer a lighter lens so the cost ,peformance and the fact i do not use 50mm all that often would swing it.

Manc91

The sigma really surprised me by making it such a close call between the two in terms of performance. But to match up with my 35mm f1.4, I’m going with the Sony 50 1.4, the size is alone is the difference of whether I take the camera out with me or not.

AF isn't the fastest of my lenses, but it is about the same speed as my Sony 85 f1.8 and fast enough to keep up with my hyper charged two year old. I'm sure the Sony GM's are even nicer, but not 3-4 times nicer for the amount I use a 50mm.
