LR Lens Profile for Sony FE20-70/4G

Saw an update for LR Classic 12.2 and was hoping it would add a lens profile for the FE20-40/4G lens. Unfortunately, it does not. I know, LR says it has a profile built in and is preloaded, but that built-in profile is only for CA correction and not distortion. The distortion of the lens is quite bad, esp in the wide end. I am on the road and am unable to use Lens Profile Creator to make one. I am wondering if anyone with the lens would be able to create a profile and share it.

I am wondering if anyone with the lens would be able to create a profile and share it.That is what I see also on DPR's samples from this lens.  It's too new.  The lens has not been released in US market until March 3rd.  Hope Adobe will have another update soon after.

Don't hold your breath. It might come with the next release, or it might inexplicably take six months like the profile for the 24-70GM ii (that lens was released last June, yet the lens profile for LR/Camera Raw did not arrive until December).

The distortion correction is already embedded in the raw files, but Adobe does not read/apply it for unknown reasons. Someone should file a bug with Adobe.

But even the built in correction profile seems poorly done. I was suggested I should use Iridient to convert as it will read the built in profile but the result is still very disappointing.

Huh, I thought Capture One was the only other developer that could read the embedded profiles, interesting... They're fully usable out of the box on C1 tho, unlike Adobe.

They're fully usable out of the box on C1 tho, unlike Adobe.I double checked both Iridient Developer and S-Transformer and the Iridient ARW based metadata lens corrections for the 20-70f4 are being read and applied by both Iridient applications (assuming the corrections are not intentionally turned off).The results seem to mostly be a fairly close match to the results from the in-camera JPEGs across a wide range of focal lengths I checked. It's not unusual for the camera JPEGs to use a bit stronger, more aggressive corrections and I do see some of that here at the wide end.In both Iridient Developer and S-Transformer you can enable/disable each of the lens corrections individually (distortion, CA and vignetting) so it's possible to check between fully uncorrected RAW, with ARW based corrections applied during RAW processing and the camera JPEG corrections.Some RAW processors may use lens corrections that are custom to that one program and not based on the ARW file metadata. Also there can be some variation in both the processing methods used and the strength of the correction applied that can lead to some variation in final image appearance just like with most other aspects of RAW (color, detail, noise, etc).In the sample images I looked at anyway (all from the dpreview test samples) the RAW corrections applied by Iridient seemed reasonably good and fairly similar to the camera JPEGs through much of the focal length range if differing a bit more at the extreme ends. If anyone has specific examples either from the dpreview samples or their own tests where the camera JPEGs seem notably better than the Iridient corrections let me know and I can look into this lenses metadata more carefully and see if Sony has altered anything about the correction metadata they are saving to the ARW, but on quick check it seems to be supported.Brian GriffithIridient Digital
