Loss of the forums - suggestion

Since DPReview is going away soon, I highly recommend all the Sony people move over to Fred Miranda's Sony forum. Lots of good info, help and questions. Now, where am I going to get help when I need it for my Canon printers?

There is also a Lens Talk forum at Dyxum.com:https://www.dyxum.com/dforum/lens-talk_forum1.html

There's a subreddit for sonyalpha though my feeling is that reddit is a relatively young crowd overall.  (It has more upbeat threads than the "photography" subbredit anyway)I've never been one for Facebook so what else is there? Dyxum still has the mini-photo-size thing I guess? It can be a pretty nice forum elsewise. (Why couldn't Facebook have shuttered??)I like fredmiranda for the possibility of pretty large images in the forum threads and I hope it shall stick around. There's also that discord channel that BastianK, lately the sole contributer at philipreeve.com, launched recently

Imho the dpreview forums are very much gear oriented where image quality comes in second place, or third, fourth and so on.For anyone primarily interested in the photographic result side of things I can fully recommendhttps://www.juzaphoto.com/which is all about image quality (galleries) in combination with data-records (brand/model) from which the highest rated results per particular camera and/or lens can be selected. The image database sports results from the very latest camera's but also from vintage (film) gear like the Canon F-1 (1971) and other oldies.

For me the downfall was the videos. I wouldmuchrather skim over an article than sit and watch a video. Not enough time to watch videos about everything.

I actually liked the videos. That's what this site set it apart from the dime a dozen other photo sites. But I do admit, I often fast forwarded the videos too.... text definitely is easier to skim.

Unless this is the worlds biggest April fools joke ???

At best, they try and give a biased response. At worst the salesmen peddle whatever they happen to have in stock and gives them the largest sales margins. Then of course calling the manufacturer directly customer service.Oh, good luck with that. Count yourself lucky if you are not redirected towards a call center somewhere in South Asia.

Not enough time to watch videos about everything.Remember that it was additional content, not replacing anything. The videos was most definitely a huge net positive in traffic and brand generation. Written articles are not as popular anymore whether you like it or not and video platforms such as Youtube is where the biggest crowds gather.

I am even thinking of paying their upload sell subscription just for uploading pictures. I'm a dual system user (Sony and Canon) and I find the threads very interesting in both forums.I also agree on the recommendations from your most recent replies to support local camera stores. I was undecided about whether to buy an A7IV or Canon R6MKII and a month ago I was able to decide which one when I tried both at a local camera store.P.S. on Fred MirandaIf you like seeing huge images posted by the forums' participants, it's the place to go. For example, check out the Zeiss Batis thread

The Lamentable Lens

I've decided to give Fred Miranda a shot.  I didn't realize that there would be a nostalgia bonus for anyone who misses 20-year-old website designs. That will take some getting used to, I suppose. As for Reddit, it's certainly no substitute for DPR (or any proper forum, for that matter), but there are some good discussions there, and it's worth checking out as a supplement, certainly not a replacement.  I moderate the r/AskPhotography subreddit, and we could always use more knowledgeable photographers to help answer the questions that get posted there.Man, I'm really going to miss this place...

Not enough time to watch videos about everything. Not so much the arrival and addition of the videos but the slow death of really in depth text based reviews.I am sure once the videos were added site traffic would have gone up, the bread & butter of a commercial web site but all Chris & Jordan's review videos are short and simply cannot be in-depth. They are in fact tailored to run for as long they do.The length is about right for overview testing to give a feel for a new camera/lens and how it performs but true in-depth reviews need text, resolution charts, sample photos and so on that just can't be presented in a video. There are detailed videos out there produced by the likes of Mark Galer that go into great detail about how don't AF works and other complex topics but they really are a chore to watch through and like most videos don't come with a table of contents where you can skip to the relevant section.Chris & Jordan's video's are a fun distraction but are no substitute for the depth of content you get in a written review. Anyone who doesn't know that I am on about should check out the early reviews done on this site by Phil Askey.I think I am going to have to start buying print magazines again like Amateur Photographer here in the UK to get my fix for written reviews.

The Discord server Bastian started seems great so far but I was already familiar with Discord, it can be a little dizzying to figure out at first and it's not as easy to reference any old discussion as a forum where you can use Google search... I'll probably start visiting Fred Miranda more often myself, and the mu-43 boards. It's crazy that the treasure trove of info here is just going poof tho, sigh...Edit: Re. Discord, even tho it's more of a chat/hangout than a message board it does break things out by topic (channels) and the folks that contribute to and follow PhillipReeve.net are all big on Sony obvs, the search is actually pretty powerful once you figure out so even tho the on the fly convos may not be the best way to reference info it can still be a useful tool. DPR's search was woeful but at least Google indexed the boards well enough.Ultimately whether any one hangout proves useful is about the people, and DPR had the largest mass of that by far.

Becksvart wrote:Dyxum still has the mini-photo-size thing I guess? It can be a pretty nice forum elsewise. What is the mini-photo-size thing? We don't have any way of restricting size of photos at Dyxum that I'm aware of. We encourage people to post reduced size versions for two reasons:1. It makes stuff download quicker for other users who might not be on super-fast connections.2. Low-res versions are less prone to being stolen off the web.
