Dropped my 70-200mm f/4L IS USM (pics)

Had it attached to my 5DmkII which was hooked up to my computer. USB got snagged on my chair as I wheeled away and boom - hit the floor from about 3 feet.Body is fine as is the mount. Lens still shoots sharp, still focuses, IS still works but there's no doubt it's bent. Anyone experience this before? I'm expecting it's going to be half the cost of the lens to fix.Pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/73075185@N00/3212940995/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/73075185@N00/3213785434/

The bent part is empty combination of plastic/metal and wires running inside as far as I know. I have the same lens, haven't dropped it though, but I have seen this happen to someone else where his lens was completely split in two part and this part held nothing but aforementioned things.I think you should be fine, if you don't mind it being bent. -- Regards from Macedonia, Ljupcohttp://www.istockphoto.com/ljupco http://www.flickr.com/photos/ljsphotography/

Contact Canon Service, You might be surprised. Dosen't cost to call, then you can decide on the repair, etc. Open like that might allow dust/moisture in and cause a greater problem.Does it really shoot straight, don't see how. Doesn't it wobble any? If it were an inexpensive kit lens and you had others, Ok, maybe let it be (I wouldn't) but a 70-200 f4 IS....get it fixed. The added stress might cause further damage. If you're going to put it up for 'fire sale' let us know. Might be worth $10 or $20... Seriously, consider getting it fixed.

...and if you decide on the $10 or $20, and my guess you are possibly in Boca Raton, I can drive up from Miami..... kidding. I know you are not laughing and I'm sorry, and do feel your pain (been there). Seriously, call Canon.p.s. I see close to north of the Border (?) Never mind.....

I think I'm going to drop it off at Henry's (where I bought it) on my way home tonight. I can't live with it looking like that. Good point about the moisture etc.

I had a dropped Olympus 35mm which a relative did in, and thought it was a total loss (10 yrs ago). Called Olympus and a $100 refit and it was like new. I have had even better service from Canon. Recently had a 100-400L stop using center-focus between 300-400mm (used ring of fire OK) Called Canon and it had to be sent. Their service was amazing and I had it back in a a week including shipping. I had a problem with an out-of warranty 580EX, and while it was $100 to fix, cheaper than a new unit.I don't know 'Henry's", but just from personal experience, and that of friends, it has always been faster to send directly to Canon vs having a middleman (even the local store I might have bought it from) ship it. UPS with insurance..... I would call Canon first and get an estimate.

Someone already suggested calling the Canon Service Dept. - Do it. I dropped my 24-105 and they fixed it very reasonably, had it back to me within a week. Extremely satisfied with the service and the results. It's one of the reasons I keep buy Canon products.

I saw this problem before, someone posted simmilar issue. I think it is because small plastic connectors got broken. I have same lens, never dropped as well as any other I own.

Simply NOT possible! Lens axes NOT in line.Take it apart, see what's broken, and order some parts. I fixed (and then later replaced) the IS unit in mine. shoot something that covers most of the image area... you'll see that you just got yourself a 70-200 TS-E hello, oblique depth of field

I can't imagine how much that must have hurt.

i recently dropped my 40d+battery grip with the 10-22 zoom attached. landed on concrete and the barrel was bent and the whole lens was loose. didn't work at all. my camera had scuff marks and the pop-up flash needs to be nudged to open. anyway, i sent it to canon, irvine and they returned it in a week, during the holidays. they completely replaced the outside barrel of the lens with a brand new part. it's so new, the distance scale even has the clear plastic sticky protector over it.they billed me $95, which is the standard bill for looking over an out-of-warranty lens. i was sure it would have cost at least half of what i paid for it. they probably would have done it for free if it was still under warranty. they are awesome.

That's really silly. You don't know what damage it could cause the lens or even the camera if you power it up and try to use the lens. You could damage it even more.Just call Canon and get it fixed.Rich

Dropped out of a partially closed camera bag. Also about three feet, onto concrete. This was at the start of a four week overseas trip about a year ago.It seemed to work OK at first, but became progressively worse over exposing shots - it was obviously not shutting down. Then started giving Err 99, and became unusable by the end of the trip.Cost me $900 New Zealand for a replacement IS unit and recalibrate, and has been OK since. For some reason my wife convinced me not to claim on the insurance, so an expensive lesson.I have also dropped flash guns, and paid NZ$150 for a new zoom unit on 430EX.

Thanks to everyone. After reading the replies I decided to send it directly to Canon. I took a closer look at a couple of shots from it last night out of curiosity. It's still sharp, but only in places - as someone said, it's shooting like a TS-E.

I am pretty quite sure that there should be something wrong with your lens by now. Certainly you will have some issues with that bending in the future and if i was in your place i would have already gone to a Canon service. It is such a good lens to be left without the proper attention...As for mr Ljupko from "Macedonia" and his greetings, i would like to send this message in my bad english:Dear friend,I already tried to contact you on facebook but "dpreview" works just fine, since it is one of my favourite sites and forums. I would like to kindly ask you to stop sending greetings from "Macedonia" since you have probably never been to northern Greece (this is the name for this part of my country for about 3000 years now...)! People like you, who show passion for art and photography, should try spending a few hours in a nearby library, studying some history. A southern part of your todays country, that is "Skopjie" for the past very few years, (small part of former Yougoslavia) used to be a small part of ancient greek Macedonia but that is as far as it goes. Your language and your whole cuture have nothing to do with Alexander the Great, king Philippos or philosopher Aristotelis and all you know and support is just the work of skopjian political propaganda in the last five decades or so. Feel free to write your historical arguments (if you have any of cource) but try to understand that your (and your fellow countrymen's) behaviour really won't do your country any good. No matter how many airports and streets you name "Alexander the Great", you cannot change ancient history that way. By kissing former president Bush's ass or perhaps Obama's to, is not the wright way to become friends with other Balkan countries. We share the same passion for photography (and Canon perhaps...) and stealing my country's past and history is just not fair. Maybe you should try sending greetings from "Vardarska" if that rings any bells...Yours sincerely and greetings to all of you very good creators of photographs out there...P.S. I could have sent you this entire text in Alexander's language (since it is my native language as a Greek) but i am pretty damn sure that you wouldn't understand a single word...

Well, I dropped my 100-400mm attached to my new 50D from about 5 feet onto a wooden deck. It appears that the brunt of the blow was taken by the lens hood! The hood popped off and had a broken bit. The only other damage appears to be the battery door flew off and the pin on one side sheared off. A new door for $16 including shipping took care of that. So, I feel quite lucky.
