Ooooh, sorry to hear that. I use a card reader for that very reason now as I'm a total clutz. For the same reason I only place my camera on the floor and never an elevated surface such as a table or desk. Had my laptop come crashing down doing that same thing, the screen was toast.

Forgot to mention: good point(s) about using a card reader. I'll do some searching on the forum to see what a half decent one is in terms of speed. Thanks again to all.

Take a look at this one.http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/537132-REG/Lexar_RW035_001_Professional_UDMA_Dual_Slot_USB.html#reviewsPerfect for me on two counts.... Reads both CF USMA & SDHC. All my cameras use either the CF or SDHC, and now with the 5DMkII, the UDMA CF... Works perfectly and not too pricey.

Dropped mine two weeks after purchase. Looked just like your photo.Bads --- took a couple of months to fix it and cost $700. The lens was new at the time and this may have accounted for the delay.Goods --- the lens after repair is spot on Used it for almost two years now and no troubles. For an example photo taken with the repaired lens look at the "Coulthard" shot in this collectionhttp://homepage.mac.com/jeck/PhotoAlbum91.htmlI was so pleased with the repair job that I dropped off a 12 by 18 of the shot at Canon (Irvine) for the repairman.

Big issue is you will need to have it cleaned for dust in about a year if you procrastinate. Repair will be around $200-300 . Canon will not tell you the cost over the phone but it will be general and a flat rate. If it is less than 90 days old some credit card companies will cover accidental damage and theft (AX)

Thanks again for all the info.I just got off the phone with Canon regarding the repair quote. It's going to cost $127.72 +shipping and tax. Much cheaper than I thought it would be but still an expensive enough lesson. There is now a card reader on my desk.

Although many have already given you an answer, I also dropped a 28 to 70L and bent the front of the barrel to the point that the lense would not aoom or focus. Canon repair took about 4 weeks and cost $235. That was about 4 years ago.I would also check with your local full service Camara store. I have had good experiecne with their repair service. -- Joe

I personally would not let anyone other than Canon Repair work on my equipment. My success rate with them has been outstanding. Let us know your thouoghts when you get it back.
