An around the world camera of your choice

mc-101

Dear Leica photo forum members,As the we near the end (of DPReview) ....If you were going on a once-in-a-lifetime around the world trip, what camera and lenses would you take? Would you take a one-lens setup, a two-lens setup, or something else entirely?I would like to hear your opinions and recommendations, perhaps based on your own experiences and shooting styles.Do you prefer the simplicity and versatility of a one-lens setup, such as the Leica 35mm f/2 Summicron-M, or do you prefer the flexibility of a two-lens setup, such as pairing a 28mm and 50mm lens together?Or, do you think that a Leica camera may not be the best option for this type of trip and would recommend another camera system entirely? If so, what would you recommend?I look forward to hearing your thoughts and recommendations.

I think I would take two cameras.the first would depend on if image quality or versatility was your top priority. For IQ If I could afford it I would get a Leica Q2. I think the ability to have effectively 28, 35 and 50mm options at acceptable MP in a single body and lens combo would be ideal. I know it’s only cropping but with enough MP that’s ok.for versatility the Sony RX100 vi or vii. The 24-200mm is ideal and even allows some wildlife shooting. The IQ is very good, the lens sharp and the camera very small.my second camera is the amazing Sealife DC2000. It’s a tiny waterproof, drop proof underwater camera with a 1 inch Sony sensor and a very sharp 31mm equiv f1.8 lens. It slips easily into even a small pocket and is ideal for beach, boat trips, snorkeling, hiking etcI travelled to Europe with the Sony and sealife and never regretted it. Ideal combo.cheers

Q2. Sorted.

Sounds like my annual major trip, wherever I am going. I bring along 3 bodies each with a different lens and generally my Summicron 75mm for a second M lens. The lenses will vary depending on where I’m going and whether I’ll need shorter, longer or both, generally carrying only 2 bodies with appropriate lenses.

As I have traveled a lot I find the SL2 with the 24 <>70 mm/f=2.8 and the M11 & APO 35/2 combination perfect.good luck

My M9, 2 lenses, 1. MATE, all round, 2. VM35mm/2 III. low light (no money for 35-AA).Plus an iPhone 4 for occasional video.Less is more, simple is travel.QED, . . . Steven

I would take a CL with the 18-56 and the 11-23. It has good autofocus and good IQ. The only downside is the lenses are relatively slow. Even though I now have an M10-R and a couple of lenses, I plan on keeping the CL for times where I need the extra FOV that the 11-23 provides. Or when I don’t want to have to focus manually in low light. I could get the visa flex for the M10-R but….

Travellingfrank

Well, i guess it would really depend on what you want to shoot.....for Landscape, Architecture, Portraits and Street photography I would take my Q2M.For action sports and wildlife photography I would take my Sony A7Rv with a 70-200 lens.

I would take the q2 and my sl2 +75sl apo combo. Thinking id use q2 for everything and since I'm heading around the world if q2 breaks or I get bored of the 75 I can always swap it out with a different lens. Will wear them both at the same time while I'll travel around 🤓

Dr. Ulrich Rohde

Likewis i have the CL also but being discontinued i did not list it. The TriElmar 28-35-50 is extremly useful but f=4 and internal reflexions makes it less desirable. The Apo 35/2 mm is a good compromise. To complicate things I realy like the S3 an the Zeiss Contax 55/3.5 mm but thats a bit on the high end .Sorry to see this discussion forum fade away

Probably the most practical choice is a Q2. But I’d take a digital M with 21, 35, and 50. I’d shoot 35 most of the time, 50 for occasional portraits of my traveling companions, and 21 every once in a while.

Wolf's Head

I’d be happy with my Q2, but if weight were not a limiting factor, I think my choice might say “Hasselblad” on it…

For cameras I'd take an M10-R and a Lumix GX8.M10-R lenses: Zeiss 21/2.8 (framed via the rear LCD, focused via LCD or zone); Leica 28-35-50 Tri-Elmar (MATE); MS Optics 73/1.5 Sonnetar (compact & light, lovely rendering quality) and a v5 50mm Summicron for the speed and closer focusing compared to the MATE.GX8 lenses: 14–140mm (really good performer, great value); 25/1.4 and a 42.5/1.7.Two small bags would carry the lot.-Dave-

Even with the camera being discontinued, there is still a lot of life left in them. The key would be to find a used one in good condition.

Dr. Ulrich Rohde

good point and i have a complete set, perfect for many applications

Dr. Ulrich Rohde

Having used it, i prefer the Fuji film GFX 100 S and its zoom

The more I travel (and get older) the more I regret hauling gear just for fear of missing it out. For my last trip to China, I took the M9P, Fuji XT3, a few lenses and my Mavic Air. I decided never again.A few months ago my wife and I went to Turkey and I only took my Canon RP with the 35mm 1.8, the 24-105, and 3 spare batteries. I could have done with the 35mm alone. Efficient and simple.
