Any idea when a updated FE 85mm f/1.2 GM is expected?

Steve W

I’m sure this might have already been cover in the past but haven’t found it.Does anyone have an idea when or if Sony plans to release an FE  85/1.2 GM? It’s a lense I would love to have even h though I currently own the 85/1.4 GM, 50/1.2 GM and 135/1.8 GM. I’ve tried out the Canon RF 85/1.2L but at 1195 GM it’s huge. The FE 135/1.8 is only 950gm.  Would love to see a 105mm f/1.4 as an alternative.if you have any info can you please share. Thank you.

I am as anxious as you are about this lens.  About 10 months ago, some sources reported that it was being tested in the field.   I assume that they must have encountered some difficulties.

+2.   I am also anxious for it's release.I am happy with my Samyang 85 1.4 rendering for people shots, but AF speed and accuracy is not great in challenging light conditions.

Hopefully soon in the next few months or early 2023.35/85 for a long time has been my preferred prime lenses. If 85 1.2 doesn't come out I dunno if I want wait longer or settle for a 50 1.2 or Sigma 85. Worse case I settle and then a month later it release fueling my GAS.

Thank you.The only people who know are not allowed to tell you.The people who will tell you are speculating.Sony's first three GM lenses were a 24-70, 70-200, and the 85. The 70-200 was replaced with a lighter, faster, really good GM II. The 24-70 was replaced. So now we are waiting to see if/when Sony will release a new 85 GM. And yes, we hope it will be an 85 f/1.2. But it is just hope at the moment - Sony has announced nothing on this subject.I really like the 50mm f/1.2 GM, and I will happily add an 85mm f/1.2 beside it, even though I have the existing 85mm f/1.4 GM.

I’ve been very happy with it but both the 50/1.2 GM and 135/1.8 GM do make me hope for an update. I also updated the the 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8 to the newer versions II when they came out which was well worth it.

Curious to see what aspects will be improved/updated.  I don't want a big increase in size and/or price if they go with 1.2.  1.4 is good enough for me in the 85mm focal length.  Autofocus speed and accuracy is my main interest. Also hope they maintain character, smooth transitions, bokeh and not just go for corner to corner sharpness.

Especially if it helps control size and weight. The Canon RF version is heavy.

It's just speculation based on the age of the current GMs and the replacements they have gotten.

Sony been adding linear motors to all the GM releases the last couple years. The FE 24-70 GM & RF 24-70 L are both about 900g. Sony did some magic reducing GMII by 20% to 695g. Hope they do the same magic for the 85 1.2 GM weight to keep it the same weight as the 85 1.4 GM or lighter!

I own Canon 85 1.2L II and 50 F1.2, also the E-mount Sony 35GM and Sigma 35 F1.2, I like the Sigma 35 1.2 a lot more. i owned the 85 1.4GM before and I will buy the 1.2 right away.

I really want 85mm gmii as 1.2 for broll filming. That 1.2 would do the effect i want. Probably it would be mainly broll and portrait lens lol. I just love good primes. That wpuld be soke collection: 16-35 gm, 20mm g and this. Then 100-400 in yhe future maybe

I have the GM 35, but always prefer my Sigma 35mm f1.2. My Zony 50mm f1.4 never got a lot of use, but the new GM 50mm f1.2 might just be my new favorite lens. I'm 'chomping at the bit' to get an FE mount 85mm f1.2. I hope that becomes a reality, soon. If not, I might need to acquire an R5 and RF 85mm f1.2.
