Every Morning: Waiting for Q3 Announcement

JoshuaR wrote:Leica's problem is that the Q2 is so good that the only improvements possible are fairly marginal. There is not one statement that I disagree with... It's a dilemma for me because when the announcement for the Q3 appears, the available Q2s will vaporize, and if there is no change to the focal length, and if I really want a Q3, I have to pay a premium price for the camera, so your post is spot-on. Thanks for clarifying the topic.David

The most sensible reason to wait for the Q3 is if you believe its announcement is forthcoming, and that it will be available within a reasonable amount of time.Let's face it, Leica demands a very, very high price for their cameras, and to pay the current asking price for the Q2, then a month or two later have the Q3 announced could be disappointing for many people.

JoshuaR wrote:Leica's problem is that the Q2 is so good that the only improvements possible are fairly marginal. As someone who's owned and loved the Q2, I think there's no truly sensible reason to want a 35mm or 50mm Q3. The whole point of the Q2—the key differentiating feature—is that it uses a single lens + high resolution to cover a large range of fields of view with no lens changes necessary. Right now it's 28mm - 75mm. Perhaps with higher resolution it could be 28mm - 90mm or 135mm—basically, the limits of what's possible using the frameline-based system we know from the M cameras. A camera that offered 35mm - 135mm or 50mm - 135mm would actually be less useful. So I doubt Leica will change the focal length. I also doubt that they'll include a tilt screen. It would compromise the brick-like simplicity of the camera. If I'm not mistaken, not even the SL cameras have tilt screens, and they're "professional" models with nice video features. So I doubt a flip screen is coming to any Leica camera anytime soon.Could there be a smaller, lighter-weight version? I don't believe the lens can shrink, optically. And the Q2 isn't that heavy. There's only one real issue with the Q2, and that's low-light performance (although I think this is a bit overblown). So a Q3 might have better high-ISO performance, USB-C charging, slightly higher resolution, possibly faster AF-C, a little bit better viewfinder, and .... what else? It's hard to figure. I don't envy Leica's designers. I'm sure it will be a better camera, but is it worth waiting for when there's already an excellent Q2?I'm sure Leica will upgrade the Q2, just to keep it current, but the camera has reached a point where it's not getting "obsolete" in any meaningful sense. I think they had the same problem with the M10-R. The thing they had going for them there was the base-plate—an obvious thing to change. The Q3 seems like a tougher problem to me. Maybe they could make it waterproof or something.(Written as a huge Q2 fan who's contemplating selling my M10 to go back to the Q2....)Increasing the resolution for the camera is the key IMV rather than anything else in particular.Imagine a 100MP version. With cropping to half the image you would still be at 50MP and a quarter of it at 25MP.At that point it easily becomes "the one camera solution" for probably 85% of people. At this stage I do not think a 100MP sensor exists in 35mm equivalent size so I expect 60 or so this time round.I don't think they will change anything significant other than that but then I would never have said they would make most of the changes they made in the M11 so what do I know?!

We have a daughter, and her family, in Conroe and a son, and his family, in Sugar Land, so we're in your area quite a bit.I hate the traffic in that area and think anyone who's brave enough to live there deserves both the iPhone 15 Pro and the Q3.We live North of you in Wichita Falls, (a much smaller city) close to the Oklahoma border.

Whatcha think?I would not call that that link a "Q3 design concept"; it was on a personal blog from 2019 and nothing official about it.Perhaps the fellow has some interesting ideas, but I agree with the others that the current button/dial arrangement for ISO is genius and an ISO wheel as proposed is a step backwards.

I am not waitingBut if I could influence the successor of the Q2, than a smaller body-lens combination would be my top priority. The ability to have raw with less mega pixels would be my second wish. All the rest can stay the same because it’s as good as it can be for my needs.

Which dealer are you referring to? I would like to speak with them about a used backup Q2.Still waiting to know who has 30 second-hand Q2s.

For me, here is what I would like for the Q3:-M11 sensor with 60mp and pixel binning (more options for digital cropping)-better high ISO performance (does the M11 sensor give that?)-joystick, like on SL2(s) instead of current 4 way switches-proper BBF, again like on SL2(s), using the joystick-tilt screen (but only if maintains size and sleekness of body)-2 models, Q3 with 28/1.7 and Q3X with 50mm (likely F2). I notice that most users need another camera, often for portraits, thus I think the 2 models choice could work (to be clear, I would NOT want the Q3 to drop the 28 in favor of a longer lens; but I would be really tempted to buy both)I'm waiting for the Q3, but not every morning... if I didn't have the Q2, yes I'd be impatient. But, I do have the Q2, and the more I use it I realize that anything else I thought the Q2 needed, it really doesn't.

From a business standpoint that doesn’t make sense. You want your existing Q and Q2 owners to trade in and trade up to a Q3 (name your improvements here). A Q3 with upgrades but only a longer facial length would likely not achieve Leica’s growth objectives.if you really insist on a longer focal length then introduce a Q3 with both options, but I still don’t understand why.if the Q3 is supposed to get the 60MP pixel binning sensor you can crop to your heart’s content without Leica needing to re engineer the whole camera for a lens that’s not needed.
