This makes me wonder who are the people buying it, current Nikon users or new converts?

But there are certainly a lot of other non-D8x0 owners intrigued by the speed and versatility of a D500/D810 DX/FX crossbreed.Alan

One hears (reads) the backlog of demands for the D850 persists in Europe, UK especially, is still causing frustration.Thom Hogan attributed shortages itlow yield of D850 sensors- "The bad news is that—again according to my sources in Japan—the yields for this sensor were initially less than expected, meaning that Nikon wasn't able to make a quick dent in all those orders that started piling up back in August 2017. This is an echo of the D800 launch, when it took six months before all the pre-orders were actually shipped. As I write this, we're at about that same six month since first ship time frame and once again earlier orders are just now getting caught up to here in the US."

Lots of positive feedback per each seller. Turns out all the D850s I've seen on FM lately are sold and the one now available, of course, is from a zero feedback seller. Good luck with your wait!

I didn't mind waiting before ordering but I hate waiting for something once it's on orderOh well, the anticipation will make the moment I first hold that camera in my hands even more appreciated

Congrats on your order, I received mine about 4 or 5 months ago. Never even held a Nikon camera before taking the D850 out of the box (mail order). All my Canon L lenses and both my 5DMKII's are gone and I have never looked back. The D850 with the Nikkor lenses I own is just photographic nirvana.

TOF guy wrote:after it hits the store shelves ... and ...It’s back-ordered!Jusr show how popular the camera is!I don't doubt that the D850 is very popular. However, just because it's back-ordered doesn't say anything about how popular it is. The only parameter of how popular the camera is would be how many units they have shipped and sold.

Jenny wrote:Congrats on your order,Thanks! All my Canon L lenses and both my 5DMKII's are goneThat answers a previous question: is it only D8x0 upgraders who got the D850. Clearly no from your post.

The only parameter of how popular the camera is would be how many units they have shipped and sold.According to Japanese sources and my friend at B&H, the D850 is hugely popular. Virtually every shooter I know has added one, sans a few old-timers who are busy scaling down to smaller systems. The buzz on the D850 was very loud and fairly unanimous, thus enthusiasts of all sorts wanted one. The big files are also less of an issue now as many people updated their systems since the D800 hit shelves.I had mine ordered from B&H, but gave up and ordered mine from Amazon mid October. It came in just two weeks.Rob

iseeu wrote:I just got my D850 from a small store locally without the need to order;-)Same here, very small local shop, saw D850 in showcase while checking on the Nikon 20mm. Someone had already put deposit on it, but the UPS guy came in with another while I was there. It turned out to be an unordered impulse buy with no wait on my part. I took the 20mm as well.D
