Just ordered the D850 more than 6 months ....

She got it from Amazon and it shipped in 3 weeks. Mine also came via Amazon in less time than that (barely) in October. Her 1st one came from B&H, but she's NPS.I'm in LA and she's in NY.But anyone who thinks Nikon is shipping small numbers of these is daydreaming. The D850 checks too many boxes for many shooters to resist. Folks who held off after the D800 want one, as do many D810 owners. D500 owners have ordered them in droves. And lower end D750/D610 owners can see this is finally something they must have.On top of all of that, the D850 being hyped (deservedly so) by so many as the "best ever" mean a lot of Canon and Sony people switched or added a D850.Rob

I could only vaguely see her silhouette. Yet the focus locked w/o problem.First I noticed on the AF was it was nailing backlit subjects where my D810 was hit or miss.

Going to shot myself next time I'll try to take a pic with it.By the way, really nice shots !

The only thing I see is eye-AF, which is NOT a pro feature. It's a crutch.I think I can toss my D850 into the air and kick it over a stop sign and it will still nail focus.Rob

So that was done with the D810, obviously. At the end of the day, after having taken some900photos (!), and as I was reviewing them, I was wondering what would have gone better if the D850 had come on time. But the focus forall900 images was exactly where I wanted it to be, the exposure was nailed each time, very consistent, although several boys wore black suit (the max "exposure" change I did in post was 0.2 stop), the detail is fantastic and much more than I'll ever need either for printing or viewing the images on screen. All the pruning I did among the 900 images was all about composition, because there was notoneimage where the D810 had failed me (the photog is another story :-D) .Granted I am familiar with it, which helps a lot.But now that I have the D850 and have had the chances to put it through a few paces I can answer my own question. What would have gone better at that prom with the D810?Nothing. Nada. Rien du tout. Zilch. No doubt the D850 is overall better, But the D810 is so good, I can tell it's only when going to push the envelope with the D850,, like shooting some fast action at 9 FPS, that I am going to get a meaningful difference. It's going to be fun to do that. But in the mean time the D850 is not this oh so much better and so magic and so whatever body some here wants you to believe. For many situations the results will be ...the same

I shot some wildlife here in LA with the D810 and the 200-500 and 70-200. Shooting softshell turtles in varying lighting, the D810 absolutely struggled at times. Now these aren't moving all that fast in the water, but not long after I returned with the D850 and the same glass. Even with the very low contrast scenes the D850 did not falter. It nailed every shot (though I did not care for the look of the shots), it clearly did better than the D810.I've done very little with birds in flight, but I did fairly poorly with the D810 shooting gulls and pelicans. Today I did MUCH better with the D850 with many shots sharp.Obviously 9 FPS can also aid in action shooting. The D810 is a terrific camera. I used it for set photography and it was absolutely perfect...just like a wedding and just what we'd expect. But there are other situations where the D850 clearly leads. If you're a wedding shooter, you may have wasted your money on a D850 vs. D810, but that's up to the individual. Still, I do wonder why some folks bothered to upgrade.Rob

As you point out, the D810 is still an outstanding camera in that regard, and I was reluctant to sell it.

Why do I have a feeling that when the D860 comes out you write something along the lines of you couldn’t get an image of a sea lion with the D850 but the D860 is so grandiosely better it never misses a bit.If you can’nt Get the shot with a D810 I suggest upgrading the photographer first and foremost

No questions about the lighting or the color of the animal and relative contrast in the water.I'm glad I didn't bother as it only highlights that few here are all that interested in anything beyond debate. And the folks who argue the most here tend to rarely post a pic or have stuff in their galleries. No one argued that the D5 and D500 have GREAT AF, but now that the D850 has the same module we should defend the D810's inferior module?Yeah...that makes perfect PC sense.Rob

I love my D810. I get a lot of shots I am very happy with. But, in some situations (mainly flying birds against busy backgrounds) it fails to lock focus or looses it. Having had a D500 briefly, and played with a D850, for situations like that they are far superior. For anything holding still, I wouldn't upgrade necessarily - but for wildlife, the extra pixels are helpful too.

The D500’s AF was dramatically better and the D850’s is right there with it.
