micro43.org: A place for Micro Four Thirds Talk to continue

Lepewhi

I joined yesterday!! So, looking forward to seeing it succeed.  If someone could begin this site, how Amazon, who gets some of its revenue from selling cameras, has decided to shoot themselves in the foot, is beyond me.

Just joined. Great idea. Thank you for your time and effort to do this.

iOS iCab won’t open it at all, “Network Error”. At least I know I use a safe browser.

In fact, the TOS are very common amongst many websites and I have never heard yet of anyone having their image used outside of the website itself. I think the furore over the new TOS has been very much a case of misunderstanding. The new owners may not have the same caring attitude as Amin did, but there's nothing wrong with the site as a whole. It's still a fine place to share mages and knowledge, as far as I'm concernedAnd I should add that the numbers of the "exodus" still remain uncertain. It seems a lot of members have come back quietly since the takeover.... lol_____________________________________ Some of the coolest things in life are really, really small. https://www.flickr.com/photos/roddyhays/When I looked at the TOS of mu-43 - and this was over a year ago - it seemed rather emphatic that the new owners (VerticalScope) claimed perpetual license to posted materials, to use as they see fit.  This was different than the photo forum I belonged to, which did not make such claims. For someone like me - I'm not a particularly good photographer - the TOS is a nothingburger - but for some of the good photogs, and for folks who maybe have beliefs in certain principles, it can be a big turn-off.Of course, it's possible the TOS was modified since I looked.

They just don't post images.

I just joined micro43.org with the same username as here! It is plenty fast and the experience is nice and uncluttered! There are many people here/there with IT experience, I suspect. Please let us know if we can help, either with the server or with donations!

This is not a discord server, from what I can see. It's not accessible from the discord app. It's just a website with a forum.Discord links usually start with "discord.gg/..."EDIT: The laugh's on me. I read it as "I set up a new Discord server" (which is the term used for new Discord hubs/groups), but it says "I set up a new DISCOURSE server", LOL. AND it has the same slate gray theme.Nevermind!

thats a nice looking and functional siteRp

I welcome the attempt to set something up for us.  However, my feeling is that the success, past success, of DPR was due to it being a cross-format site.  Each format or user group had their silos of like-minded photogs but benefited from cross pollination and friendly rivalry of other platforms.  There are already pure m4/3 sites but I suspect they lack the vibrancy that we have (had) with DPR.

Thank you for creating the new micro43 forum. ... it's very much appreciated and good to see some familiar names there already. With very best wishes.Adrian

There are already pure m4/3 sites but I suspect they lack the vibrancy that we have (had) with DPR.DPR was quite unique in that way, for sure. The easy movement between 'forums' was a big draw, and the level of activity, variety and 'Clarity' of presentation and info was also unique. BUT, that was due to a good idea BACKED by big funds and technology. Considering just what activity there was in the 3 forums I visit, M43, Landscape, Nature - the Bandwidth and Storage requirements are HUGE, ENORMOUS... Something only a backbone like Amazon/AWS could afford and provide. I'm a member of some other Photo websites, the ones which are Multi-format, are weak and slow in activity for M43. There are sites for specific genres, like Outdoor/Nature/Landscape, and very good for that, but not a place I expect info outside of that realm. There are other M43 oriented and general, but the AD intrusion has climbed logarithmically, especially since the DPR closing announcement. I think a 'non-commerical' site, broad in scope - at least for M43 - easy on nav - genuinely directed for user interaction, without security issues, and broad acceptance, is ideal. Given that micro43.org is less than a week old, and genuinely seems for the members/users, it's worth giving a good 'go'. This kind of thing only works because of participation. F*nb*y? I don;t see any better options which might give what was had on DPR. Positive action is, for me, better than none. The cost? A little time and further effort on my images, if I want to post them. All very positive for my own improvement. 'Home' is where you make it... Thx YuriEDIT: I have asked, and the site admin/owner has stated he would like to keep it as 'flat' and broad as possible, less pigeonholing, more inclusion... and that's what I'm seeing.

Background it started off as a FREE SITE. Then the traffic build up n he modified the SW to include Ads. In the process messed up our pics and did not take responsibility to fix the mess up. I took him to task and he reluctantly got it fixed. Then he started charging. Not a truthful person in my book. Just like Mark of FB. I stopped using FB years back. Turned out to be a right one selling off FD users info. I deleted my pics becos I do not wish to have anything to do with Amin. Others may find him ok. Not me. Wasn’t afraid that pics will be stolen. Move to Flickr with Pro Account and got one of my pics stolen. Male green pigeon with his 2 chicks UNDER HIS WINGS.it’s a great site. When I started posting people were very friendly. I just visited the site yesterday n was reading my old postings and brought back great memories of the people I met there. Minus all my pics. Don’t see their names on the current postings. Must have moved on. Been with DPR for many years. I do not rely on their reviews to buy my cams. I am early adopted. I remember when I bought Panasonic DSLR L10 members on this forum were going nuts at how expensive it was. I then bought the PL 14-.150 f5.6 and I still have this faithful combo. Trevor and Luis were from those good old days. I am going to miss DPR becos I read it every night before I sleep.sign up to this new siteHave a great weekendDrHook59 wrote:Mel C wrote:I am not surprised that Amin Sabre sold off the site. I posted there around 2010 and kicked off the thread BIRDS under ricseet. Helped built up the traffic. I had a gut feel that Amin is not truthful person and was in for the money. I deleted all my bird postings. will never go back there again. This is a bizarre post, Mel. Surely running a website for profit is something not entirely unusual in this day and age? Amin's $20 a year subscription was fine by me and many others. I didn't care whether he used to cover his running costs or rolled it up and smoked it, he was charging for a service and he had every right to.And I'm surprised you deleted your content. Were you one of the ones who were worried that their photos were going to be 'stolen'? Has anyone on mu-43 EVER had their photos stolen? I really do doubt this will ever happen; I'm pretty sure VerticalScope lose ALL of their members as a result, lol_____________________________________ Some of the coolest things in life are really, really small. https://www.flickr.com/photos/roddyhays/

TheRealYeats

mu-43 is still "free" - the subscription fee Amin implemented gets users additional features.A few years ago I was a member of one of Amin's other sites when he described the financial situation. He solicited ideas and held open dialogue with forum members. IMO he was as transparent as one could reasonably hope for.The site seems to be faltering under the new ownership.  The latest problem involves members who paid for their subscription but have not had the new features enabled, and the current ownership (VerticalScope) has been unresponsive.
